The Cream and Crimson saw their field athletes have an especially strong performance with 6 total wins over the weekend.
Indiana track and field competed at the Gibson Invitational on April 17-19 in Terre Haute, Indiana. The Hoosiers simultaneously competed in the Wake Forest Invitational on April 17-18 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, from April 17-18 and the Tom Jones Invitational on April 18-19 in Gainsville, Florida.
Field athletes get several personal bests at Gibson Invitational
The Hoosiers' split weekend started out strong in Terre Haute, Indiana, at the Gibson Track and Field Complex for the Gibson Invitational. Sophomore Garrett Messer opened the meet with a win in the decathlon 400-meter dash, finishing the race with a time of 49.89 seconds. Messer placed first in the decathlon shot put with a throw of 14.39 meters.
Sophomore Max Grangier also had several significant performances in decathlon events at the Gibson Invitational. He achieved a personal record in the decathlon 100-meter dash and placed ninth with a time of 11.21 seconds. Grangier also had personal bests in the decathlon long jump and high jump. He placed fourth in the long jump, reaching a length of 6.63 meters, and placed fifth in the high jump reaching a height of 1.85 meters.
For the second day of the Gibson Invitational, Messer acquired two more individual wins in the decathlon 110-meter hurdles and the decathlon discus throw. He placed first in the men's decathlon with a personal record of 7,127 points.
Grangier placed first in the decathlon 1500 meter run with a time of 4:21.83, which set a Gibson Invitational record. He placed third in the men's decathlon with 6,533 points.
For the individual field events, freshman Hannah Alexander won the women's discus throw with a length of 52.06 meters.
Freshman Caleb Smith placed second in the men's discus throw with a personal best throw of 50.39 meters. Senior Hunter Smith also had a personal record in the discus throw, placing third with a throw of 50.38 meters.
Freshman Dalton Boisseau placed second in the javelin throw with a length of 58.20 meters.
The final day of the Gibson Invitational brought the Hoosiers several more wins in the field.
Indiana swept the shot put, with freshman Hannah Alexander placing first for the women with a mark of 13.77 meters, followed closely by junior Makayla Hunter, who thew for 16.52 meters. On the men’s side, freshman Dane Sebert placed first with a mark of 17.90 meters.
The Hoosiers also swept the hammer throw. Senior Hunter Smith placed first for the men with a throw of 55.98 meters and sophomore Bridget Beyer won for the women with a throw of 51.77 meters.
Distance runners compete at Wake Forest Invitational
At the Wake Forest Invitational at Kentner Stadium in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Indiana's distance runners showed their strength.
Junior Abe Eckman and freshman Dylon Nalley both had historic performances in the men's 10,000-meter run. Eckman placed fifth with a personal best time of 28:47.69, which put him in second place in program history for the event. Nalley placed eighth with a time of 29:12.38 and moved to ninth in program history.
Nalley also had a strong performance in the 5000-meter run, placing sixth with a time of 14:16.81.
Freshman Ines Herault started the final day of the Wake Forest Invitational with a personal record time of 10:45.11 in the women's 3000-meter steeplechase, earning her sixth place.
Senior Taylor Fox and freshman Lily Myers placed 28th and 29th, respectively, for the women's 1500-meter run, moving both into the top 20 in program history for the event.
On the men's side, junior Andrew Mangum ran a personal best time of 1:49.43 for the 800-meter run and placed fourth.
Sprint and mid-distance runners show their strength at the Tom Jones Invitational
The Hoosiers continued their success with several more historical records at the James G. Pressly Stadium in Gainesville, Florida, for the Tom Jones Invitational.
Day one of the Tom Jones Invitational started with junior Jania Hodges placing 17th in the women's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 57.85, moving her to second in program history for the event.
Sophomore Ryann Parrish and senior Olivia Gee's performances in the women's 400-meter hurdles moved them to eighth and 17th, respectively, in program history for the event.
Senior Trelee Banks-Rose recorded a personal record in the men's 200-meter dash, placing sixth in the event with a time of 20.47.
On the final day of the Tom Jones Invitational, senior Sean Mockler placed third in the men’s hammer throw with a personal best mark of 67.09 meters.
Additionally, Banks-Rose ran a personal best 10.05 in the men’s 100-meter dash, earning him fourth in the event.
The Hoosiers will compete at the Kentucky Invitational on May 2-3 at Shively Track and Field Stadium in Lexington, Kentucky.
