Indiana track and field competes in first outdoor meets of the season

Indiana track and field boasted strong performances in their first outdoor meets of the season. The team traveled across the country to compete in two different meets over the weekend: the Raleigh Relays on March 27-28  at the Paul Derr Track Facility in Raleigh, North Carolina, and the Battle of the Bayou on March 28-29 at Louisiana State University's Bernie Moore Stadium in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  

Seven Hoosiers set personal bests over the two days at the Raleigh Relays. 

Juniors Nolan Satterfield and Cole Raymond ran career best times in the men’s steeplechase, placing 29th and 45th with times of 8:55.94 and 9:05.19, respectively.  

In the men’s 5000-meter run, junior Abe Eckman ran the 11th fastest time in school history with his time of 13:46.51, placing 28th and earning himself a personal record. Three other Hoosiers set personal bests in the 5000-meter run; freshmen Tony Provenzano and Dylon Nalley along with sophomore Brayden Henkle finished with times of 14:03.52, 14:09.59, and 14:16.32 respectively.  

For the women, sophomore Katelyn Winton set a personal best in the 5000-meter run with a time of 16:33.22, placing 68th. Additionally, senior Mariah Wehrle recorded the third fastest time in school history in the 10000-meter run, finishing in 33:24.04 and placing 16th.  

On Friday, the Hoosiers opened The Battle of the Bayou with several strong performances in the field. Freshman Hannah Alexander recorded the 15th best mark in school history for the hammer throw, reaching a distance of 49.95 meters. She also secured a spot in the top 15 in school history for the discus with a throw of 51.19 meters. 

Continuing their success in the field, the Hoosiers had three personal bests in the javelin throw. Freshman Dalton Boisseau placed third with a throw of 59.58 meters, followed by sophomores Max Grangier and Garrett Messer in fifth and sixth place with throws of 53.16 meters and 49.13 meters, respectively.  

On the track, Indiana got its first and only win of the meet with junior Martin Segurola in the 1500-meter run with a time of 3:44.16. He was just 0.02 seconds faster than the runner-up.  

Sustaining their momentum on the track, the men’s quartet of juniors Novo Onovwerosuoke, Tamer Selah, Otto De St Jeor and senior Trelee Banks-Rose placed third in the 4 by 100-meter relay with a time of 39.63 seconds.  

Banks-Rose went on to place fifth in the 100-meter dash, with a personal best time of 10.21. 

The women also had strong performances on the track at The Battle of the Bayou. Freshman Veronica Hargrave finished fourth in the 800m dash and set a personal record with her time of 2:06.17. Hargrave was closely followed by sophomore Amelia Dodds, who placed seventh with a time of 2:06.47. 

The Hoosiers will have a week off before heading to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, for the Crimson Tide Invitational on April 11.
