Former Indiana men's basketball sophomore forward Mackenzie Mgbako committed to Texas A&M University out of the portal, according to his X post April 17.
Mgbako entered the transfer portal March 24 via his Instagram, saying that he would be “testing the waters of the NBA.” The decision came six days after Indiana hired Darian DeVries to be its next head men’s basketball coach March 18. He was the third Indiana player with eligibility to enter the portal.
In the post, Mgbako also said he would be “keeping an eye on developments within the Indiana program.” Between then and April 17, DeVries and the Hoosiers added six transfers out of the portal, two of them listed as forwards.
The former five-star recruit started in 64 of 65 games during his two years at Indiana and was one of two Hoosiers to start in every game during the 2023-24 season. That season, he was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman team and earned Co-Freshman of the Year.
Mgbako averaged 12.2 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game across 32 contests during the 2024-25 season.
At the time of his decision, Mgbako was the fifth of seven Hoosier players with eligibility in the portal to commit to a new school. Freshman forward Bryson Tucker committed to Washington two days after Mgbako’s announcement, leaving just sophomore guard Kanaan Carlyle as the only Indiana player in the portal.
Last season, Texas A&M head coach Buzz Williams led the Aggies to a fifth-place finish in the loaded Southeastern Conference that sent 14 of its 16 teams to the NCAA tournament. The Aggies finished with a 23-11 overall record, going 11-7 in conference play. Michigan defeated Texas A&M 91-79 in the Round of 32 on March 22.
On April 1, Williams left the program after six years and was hired in the same role at Big Ten opponent, Maryland. Three days later, the Aggies hired Samford University head coach Bucky McMillian to serve in the same role.
Mgbako will have two years of eligibility remaining.
