Monroe County is under a flood watch from 8 p.m. Wednesday to 8 a.m. Sunday, according to the National Weather Service. The flood watch includes 29 counties across the state.

The NWS warns that heavy rainfall may occur from tonight until Saturday night in multiple waves.

The City of Bloomington is encouraging residents who live in flood-prone areas to take proactive measures to prepare. Measures include:

  • Creating a risk plan: residents should make an evacuation plan and think about flood-prone roads or areas.
  • Prepare your home: use materials such as sandbags to protect homes and structures from flood waters.
  • Communication plan: keep in mind emergency contacts and create a safe meet-up location in case floods do occur.
  • Emergency kit: stock at least three days’ worth of non-perishable food, water and medication, and include flashlights, batteries, blankets, first-aid supplies, rubber boots/gloves and a battery powered radio.

According to a Federal Emergency Management Agency map, a piece of land in the middle of Bloomington is a special flood hazard area. That map can be viewed here.

The NWS also issued an ongoing wind advisory until early Thursday morning. Residents can track weather conditions on the NWS live tracker
