Indiana soccer star junior Will Bruin was drafted into Major League Soccer during the 2011 MLS SuperDraft in Baltimore, Md.
Bruin was drafted in the 11th by the Houston Dynamo, after the Portland Timbers traded their 11th round draft pick.
"I was getting a little nervous like 'What's going on?'" Bruin said from Baltimore. "Then, Houston made a trade for me so that was awesome."
Bruin, a forward, signed a Generation adidas contract, assuring him a spot in the MLS before he withdrew from his spring semester classes in Bloomington. Bruin led the Hoosiers to a Big Ten regular season championship and the third round of the NCAA tournament with his 18 goals. He was named a first team All-American and was a finalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy. In his three years at IU, Bruin scored 33 goals, with five games where he had multiple goals. A DeSmet (Mo.) High School graduate, Bruin is in a line of greats who went from DeSmet to Indiana to the MLS, including Pat Noonan.
"I'm happy to just know where I'm going and have it set in stone," Bruin said. "It's definitely a big stresser off and I'm very excited to play for Houston and Dominic Kinnear. All i'm hearing is great things."
Bruin is a St. Louis, native. He joins Akron's Kofi Sarkodie as the Houston Dynamo's newest members.
While Bruin was expected to go in the top 5, Indiana teammate Rich Balchan wasn't expected to be drafted until the second round. Instead, Balchan was drafted at No. 12 by the Columbus Crew, the former team of Indiana coach Todd Yeagley.
The Hoosiers completed the 2010 season 10-8-2.
