Fans support team despite Knight's firing

Freshman guard A.J. Moye rolled on the court laughing as junior forward Kirk Haston struggled from the three-point line. Even interim coach Mike Davis had trouble keeping a straight face as his big man competed against junior guard Heather Cassady in the final round of the three-point contest Saturday morning at Midnight Madness, the first official basketball practice of the season. Cassady outshot Haston 17-12.

Teammates turned rivals

They played on the same grass field for the last time in 1997, when the men's soccer team lost to UCLA in the NCAA Final Four in Richmond, Va. They left behind a 23-game winning streak crushed by the Bruins in a triple-overtime loss. Chris Klein, went on to a professional soccer career with the Kansas City Wizards after the 1997 campaign. Dema Kovalenko stayed at IU for the 1998 season, when the Hoosiers won their fourth NCAA championship. He then left school a year early and joined the Chicago Fire in 1999.

Fundenberger's formula: right place, right time

Jet fuel, he says. Jet fuel powered Matt Fundenberger, a senior forward on the men's soccer team, to his third-career hat trick Sunday against Michigan. In a 7-0 victory, Fundenberger showed flashes of quickness, scoring three goals in the first 26 minutes of play and assisting an another.

Women's basketball begins Midnight Madness

For the first time in history, the women's basketball team will be participating in Midnight Madness. In the past, Midnight Madness has kicked-off only the men's basketball season, but this year, it will also signal the start of the women's campaign.

After six weeks of intense practice, the men's swimming team is preparing for their Intrasquad Scrimmage at 3 p.m. Friday at Counsilman Billingsley Aquatic Center, coach Kris Kirchner said.

The club hockey team is young, relatively inexperienced and facing arguably the toughest schedule in the 32-year history of the program. But as the team prepares to enter the upcoming season, both coaches and players are confident this will be one of the strongest teams the club has ever fielded.

Wolverines ready after tough loss

Michigan coach Lloyd Carr is in a predicament IU coach Cam Cameron was in earlier this season. Cameron saw his team drop its first two games after holding big first half leads. After last weekend, Carr and his Wolverines for the second time this year dropped a halftime lead and lost, this time at Purdue, 32-31.

Coach Bennett comes into her own

Women's basketball coach Kathi Bennett came to IU six-and-a-half months ago in the shadow of two men: her father, Dick, who was busy guiding the Wisconsin men's program to the Final Four and Bob Knight, who was busy making headlines with his actions on and off the court.

Young talent, new scheme unveiled

In years past, the first practice of the season has been known simply as 'Midnight Practice.' But tonight it's 'Midnight Madness.' Interim men's basketball coach Mike Davis has decided to let the players have fun, as a reward for their hard work during grueling individual workouts. Tonight's practice is designed for the fans, and should provide a glimpse of the talent IU possesses.

Tackles share common ground

Anchoring IU's offensive line are two massive tackles who would like nothing more than for coach Cam Cameron to call an inside running play. "We will execute what is called, but when we get that chance, we will lineup with you bone-on-bone, man-on-man and see who's the tougher character," said sophomore right tackle Enoch DeMar. "We like that."

No. 2 Hoosiers finish homestand against Big Ten foes

The postseason of the men's soccer team hinges on the Hoosiers' two Big Ten games this weekend at Bill Armstrong Stadium. If IU knocks off Wisconsin and Northwestern, the Hoosiers are assured the top seed in the Big Ten tournament, as only Penn State (9-3, 3-1) has few losses in the conference like the Hoosiers (9-3, 3-0).

Junior midfielder displays wide array of talent

Ryan Mack winds up his arm and throws a little soccer ball into the stands before a match. Mack follows the toss with a huge, childish grin as he watches spectators scramble for the ball. He then sprints onto the field for the kickoff and usually clowns around with a teammate. Prior to Sunday's Michigan game, Mack jumped up and down, trying to knock over sophomore midfielder Pat Noonan.
