Jacobs summer band play outdoors on campus

Though the scene was not part of this year’s program, the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music outdoor Summer Band concerts are anything but typical. Wednesday evening marked the beginning of the outdoor concert cycle.

Comedic shorts pair well with wine, food

“Vintage Scenes,” written by Henry Greene and directed by Jim Hettmer, featured six comedic shorts inspired by Oliver Winery’s wine collection and history. Guests enjoyed a buffet-style dinner and wine tasting on the winery’s back porch at 6:30 p.m., prior to the entertainment at 7:30 p.m.

Local restaurants benefit from Taste

On Saturday afternoon, a line of people waited outside the Bombay Café tent during the 30th Annual Taste of Bloomington. Bombay Café was one of 62 local food and drink vendors at this year’s event, which took place in Showers Common next to City Hall.

Column: Summer solstice tradition

Two days after the beginning of summer, June 23 was the Lunar Calendar’s fifth day of the fifth month, also known as the “Duanwu Jie” or Double Fifth Festival. Traditionally, the fifth month has been seen as the month of poison and evil spirits due to the summer solstice.

String quartet makes 10th appearance in Jacobs summer series

As part of IU’s Summer Music Festival at the Jacobs School of Music, Jerzy Kaplanek, Jacob Braun, Christine Vlajk and Bell will perform for a Bloomington audience at 8 p.m. Thursday, June 21, in Auer Hall. The second part will take place at 4 p.m. Sunday in Auer Hall.


Opera Workshop

Workshop prepares performers for stage

On Wednesday, participants performed a series of scenes from various selected operas, including Don Giovanni and Falstaff, which will be put on by the Jacobs School this upcoming academic year.

Galleries display ‘solstice’ art for event

On June 22, the IU Art Museum will celebrate the longest day and shortest night of the year — the summer solstice — with select works that evoke the spirit of the Midsummer Night from 7 to 9 p.m.
