Coach Bob Knight, entering his 30th season at IU, has lived in the spotlight and been the center of enormous media exposure. Whether it was winning three NCAA championships or throwing a chair during a game against Purdue, Knight has become arguably the most noteworthy college basketball coach.

Pretenders. You know these people. They're the ones who pretend to be something they're not, just to be in the loop. They are sports fanatics, the movie critic's biggest fans and society's most loved conformists.

Mama Jo's a casual dining experience

Going on the recommendation of a friend, we chose Mama Jo's for lunch one weekend afternoon. The restaurant is fairly new, located on the northeast corner of 17th and Walnut streets. We were in the mood for a pleasant and casual dining experience but were somewhat disappointed with certain aspects of the meal.

IU ranks poorly among American universities

US News and World Report announced Friday, in its annual guide to America's best colleges, that IU ranks in the second tier of America's top universities, placing it outside of the top 50. On its Web site, US News said it looks at academic reputation, retention, faculty resources, financial resources and alumni giving rate as some of the factors that go into the rankings.

'U.S. News' ranks IU in second tier of colleges

Once again, U.S. News and World Report has given IU a mediocre ranking. Recently, IU has fallen within the second tier of schools when evaluated in areas such as SAT and ACT scores, freshmen retention numbers and alumni giving rate. This year was no different.

Jazz From Bloomington highlights area talent at benefit concert

The Jazz From Bloomington All-Stars, an ensemble composed of professors and other established performers, will play today at T.I.S. Music Shop, 1424 E. Third St. The concert is to publicize the group, which is devoted to attracting accomplished jazz artists to the Bloomington region.

IFC has record turnout of men at rush

Men's rush began Friday with an event in Dunn Meadow and ended Sunday with the conclusion of chapter tours. Interfraternity Council Vice President of Rush Kevin Gfell, a senior, said IFC experienced a record number of men at the events.

A man who had been arrested and was in the backseat of a Bloomington police car Sunday faces additional charges after he threatened Officer Joseph Crider with a gun from the backseat of the car, police said.

Alpha Sig knew the consequences

If you keep throwing the dice, whose fault is it when you crap out? Aug. 21, several members of Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity held a party at which the fraternity admitted alcohol was served, a violation of University and Interfraternity Council rules.

Killing to survive

A 10-year-old boy from Marion County ' accused of killing his father ' was charged with voluntary manslaughter Thursday. The judge ordered Wayne Salyers Jr., who fired a single shot with a revolver to his father's chest, to remain in detention after the sentencing in juvenile court. The Indiana Prosecuting Attorneys Council said the boy appears to be the youngest child charged with killing a parent in at least two decades. Details of the investigation are not being released.

Injury puts Michigan's title hopes on hold

Earlier this summer, New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner told Drew Henson he would make the young phenom a Yankee for life if he would quit playing football. Many would not be able to refuse the offer to play with baseball's most historic team, but Henson could not let his dream of leading the University of Michigan to a national championship die.

Coach shuffles soccer team's starting lineup

Men's soccer coach Jerry Yeagley didn't like what he saw offensively Friday night when IU played Portland, and he didn't hesitate to change his lineup. In hopes of getting center midfielders Ryan Mack, a junior, and Pat Noonan, a sophomore, more involved in the attack, Yeagley tried several lineups against Portland Friday and UCLA Saturday.

Dissent: Fraternity not the problem

For the second time in two semesters, a fraternity has been kicked off the IU campus by its national organization. And for the second time in two semesters, we don't agree with the decision.

A love-hate relationship

I have a love-hate relationship with Bloomington. I hate the heat and humidity of this quiet Midwestern town, but I love the vibrancy and spirit this city has. It's the latter that keeps me happy. And it's going to be a September to remember in this place I now call home.
