Usual suspects remain atop Big Ten standings in preseason media poll

Many things have changed in the landscape of Big Ten football. There are some new rules, a few new coaches and a new TV network dedicated to the sport. In spite of these changes, Michigan, Wisconsin and Ohio State remain the teams to beat in the conference.

IU hopes to make most of 5 yards

Five yards has the potential to go a long way for the Hoosiers this year. College football’s newest rule has pushed back kickoffs to the 30-yard line, five yards further than last year. This will result in fewer kickoffs being caught as touchbacks and more returns.

Blake Powers arrested Monday

Blake Powers, the former starting quarterback for the IU football team, was arrested on preliminary charges with a Class A battery misdemeanor.

While his team didn’t fare so well at the Pan American Games, senior IU basketball forward DJ White, shined for the American basketball team, leading the team in scoring points in three out of five games.

Big Ten Network pleads its case in Bloomington Tuesday

Whether consumers will be able to see the Big Ten Network when it launches August 30 remains the big question, as many of the large cable operators have balked at the network, saying it is too expensive. Aware of this predicament, Big Ten Network President Marc Silverman and Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delaney came to IU on Tuesday to explain the network’s appeal and how people will be affected if it is not widely distributed.

Stern blames ‘rogue, isolated criminal’ for betting scandal

David Stern has seen college basketball and German soccer overcome point-shaving scandals. He never imagined his own league would be thrown into one. The NBA commissioner blamed “rogue, isolated criminal” Tim Donaghy for that, creating a betting scandal that has devastated the league and threatened the credibility of every referee.

Pan American run over for Hoosier soccer players

For two IU soccer players, a run at Pan Am gold is over. Sophomore midfielder Kevin Alston and redshirt freshman midfielder Daniel Kelly and the rest of the U.S. soccer team were sent home with a 2-0 loss against Mexico on Saturday in the group play of the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

About 600 fans gathered in Bloomington’s AmVets Post 2000 on Saturday night to watch 30 fighters compete in the Elite Cage Fighting 15 competition. Friends, parents, siblings and wives as well as training partners and coaches were treated to 15 mixed martial arts-style cage matches, including three title defenses.

2 IU football players arrested for not paying cab fare

Two members of the IU football team were arrested early Sunday morning in Greenwood, Ind. Senior linebacker Adam McClurg and senior offensive lineman Sean Edmundson as well as University of Indianapolis defensive back Joshua Kimbowa were charged with failure to pay after a taxi ride from Indianapolis, police said.
