Here we go again

·

The last embrace between IU coach Mike Davis and Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski occurred on March 21, 2002 at centercourt of Rupp Arena in Lexington, Ky. Davis extended his hand to shake Krzyzewski's just moments after raising it above his head in a frenzied celebration. The Hoosiers had just upset the No. 1 Blue Devils, throwing Davis and the Hoosiers onto the national stage -- a place Coach K was long accustomed to.

Following a Sept. 14 article published in the Indiana Daily Student, "Team throws down competition, brews," the investigation found that members of the club -- called the Red Storm -- did not drink as a team during club-sponsored activities, although recreational sports officials declined to provide further details.

Double-OT loss in finals prevents victory for IU

·

While the IU student body took a break from school, ate leftovers and watched football, the IU hockey team stuffed itself with a full plate of hockey. During last week's break, IU took home second place in the Hoosier Thanksgiving Classic held in Carmel, Ind. With three familiar Division I teams competing, including Liberty University, Ohio State and Illinois, IU felt good about its chances coming into the tournament. The Hoosiers were able to win their first-round matchup against the Fighting Illini 6-1, but lost a heartbreaker in the championship to Ohio State 4-3 in double overtime.

Monroe to lead team effort in stopping Redick

·

For all of last season, senior guard Lewis Monroe sat on the bench in street clothes watching his team play. But despite sitting out, the Auburn transfer got some experience that would eventually prepare him for tonight's daunting task -- guarding Duke guard J.J. Redick. Monroe's defensive assignment in practice was often former IU swingman Bracey Wright, whom he chased around screens and pressured up the floor during scrimmages.

No. 1: The battle inside between IU's Marco Killingsworth and Duke's Shelden Williams Between IU's Marco Killingsworth and Duke's Shelden Williams, the paint of Branch McCracken court will be weighed down by more than 500 pounds tonight. Both perennial All-American candidates average more than 18 points and eight rebounds a game, and neither shoot below 60 percent. The 6-foot-9 Williams has an inch of height on Killingsworth, but the 268-pound Alabama native brings an additional 18 pounds to the post. A key factor in tonight's game will be which player forces the other into foul trouble first.

STILL PERFECT

·

INDIANAPOLIS -- Pittsburgh's gamble to start the second half failed, and the Indianapolis Colts made them pay for it as they took a 23-7 lead after the third quarter, earning the undefeated Colts their 11th win in a row, 26-7. The Steelers opened the second half by trying an onside kick, but rookie Matt Giordano recovered for the Colts at the Pittsburgh 37. Seven plays later, Peyton Manning hooked up with tight end Bryan Fletcher on a 12-yard touchdown pass, Manning's second of the game. That gave Indy a 23-7 lead and forced the Steelers to abandon their powerful ground game.

Tar Heels, Illini sequel not as intriguing as last year's title

·

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- As far as sequels go, this one probably is destined to be a flop -- North Carolina versus Illinois II. Think of it along the lines of "Speed 2," or perhaps "Grease 2." Either way, the rematch of last season's NCAA championship game should have a tough time equaling the original. "But it's still a big game," Illini coach Bruce Weber said Monday. "It's a good early season test for us. We'll learn more about our team." His counterpart, Roy Wiliams, certainly can say the same.

Third time no lucky charm for IU in NCAA tourney

·

There will be no three-peat for the IU men's soccer team. Not only did the No. 3 Hoosiers' season end while the final seconds ticked off the scoreboard in a 2-0 loss to Notre Dame last Tuesday, so did IU's 10-game NCAA tournament winning streak.

IU football season ends in tears

·

When Terry Hoeppner's first season as IU coach ended Saturday, he didn't want to leave the field. Instead, the coach snuck a glance at the Old Oaken Bucket -- just as it was raised skyward by a group of Boilermakers.
