Team snags 16 championship

·

The No. 15 IU women's swimming and diving team played host to an elite contingent of athletes during the IU Open Invitational this weekend at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center. The Hoosiers faced contestants from several universities, including Arkansas, Cincinnati, Hawaii, Louisville, Pittsburgh and Toledo. This year, the IU Invitational was altered to eliminate the naming of a team champion and given "open" status in order for more swimmers and divers to participate in the meet.

IU Invite given 'open' status

·

The No. 10 IU men's swimming and diving team played host to the IU Invitational this weekend at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center, racking up four titles and many individual honors. This is the first season the IU Invitational did not have a team champion because the meet changed into an open format to include more swimmers and divers in the event. Sophomore Todd Patrick led the Hoosiers, earning seven titles overall and climbing into the record books in several categories.

Hoosiers fall to No. 6 Baylor

·

For 20 minutes, the unranked IU and No. 6-ranked Baylor women's basketball teams appeared to be equals. Unfortunately for the Hoosiers (0-1), they had to play a second half where the defending national champions pulled away for a 74-62 victory Saturday at Assembly Hall. In the first half, the lead changed four times. Sophomore guard Nikki Smith contributed to the lead changes when she hit two key three-pointers to tie or give IU the lead.

Hoosiers fall on road; streak extends to 8

·

The IU volleyball team extended its losing streak to eight matches this weekend with road losses at the hands of the Illinois Fighting Illini and the No. 18 Purdue Boilermakers. The Hoosiers have lost 15 of their last 16 matches and finish winless on the road in conference play. The pair of losses drops IU's record to 2-16 in Big Ten play this weekend and 9-21 overall with two matches left in the season.

IU squares off against Irish in tourney

·

The IU men's soccer team enters the NCAA Tournament looking to do something no team has done in championship history of the program: win three national championships in a row. After a first-round bye, the No. 3-seeded Hoosiers begin their quest for a three-peat when they play host to Notre Dame 7 p.m. Tuesday. Because this is an NCAA event, students will be charged $7 for tickets.

Bengals' Chad left hanging

·

CINCINNATI -- In a game of pinball offense, Peyton Manning showed he's still the greatest wizard of them all. He called the right plays. He made incredible passes. And, ominously, he showed that the unbeaten Indianapolis Colts are just starting to hit their stride.

Hoosiers say goodbye to seniors

·

With his surgically-repaired left hand bound in a thick cast, senior linebacker John Pannozzo put on his No. 34 Hoosier uniform and pads for the very last time Saturday. Pannozzo and the other IU seniors hoped that by the end of the day they would raise the Old Oaken Bucket high for more than 50,000 fans in Memorial Stadium to see. Instead, they held their heads high after a season finale loss.

Colonel 'Killing'

·

Three IU players rewrote their personal history books Friday night after the 99-65 victory over Nicholls State in Assembly Hall. Among the Hoosiers posting career-best performances was senior forward Marco Killingsworth. The Auburn transfer showed the Hoosier faithful what they were missing last season -- posting career highs in points, rebounds, assists and blocks.

After 'hard week' of practice, Hoosiers ready for weekend

·

The No. 15 IU women's swimming and diving team will play host to the IU Invitational Friday through Sunday at the Councilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center. The Hoosiers (4-2) will set out to prove their two-week recess after the Nov. 5 dual meet against Illinois was time well spent.

Aw, just bucket

·

Has there been a more important game to a more insignificant season of Hoosier football? Not for coach Terry Hoeppner. He has already had his share of perfect Thursdays followed by predictable Saturdays -- mostly resulting in a 1-6 conference record. First, coach Hep wanted YOU. And all you wanted to do was tailgate, shotgun a beer and lick the side of a girl's face.

For Hoeppner, Hoosiers, it comes to one chance

·

Though they may not come out and say it, the Hoosiers know it. Saturday is their one chance. The Hoosiers have one chance to finish two wins better than last year's campaign, one chance to break a five-game losing streak and one chance to salvage their season by capturing one of college football's oldest trophies -- the Old Oaken Bucket -- when they welcome rival Purdue to Memorial Stadium Saturday.

Hoosiers welcome national champion Baylor for opener

·

To start the season, Big Ten women's basketball teams like No. 10 Michigan State welcomes University of California-Santa Barbara and Western Carolina University. Illinois faces Loyola University Chicago. And Northwestern prepares for Creighton University. Meanwhile, the Hoosiers have the privilege of playing defending national champions Baylor to start their season. IU will tip off the 2005 regular season against the Lady Bears at 6 p.m. Saturday in Assembly Hall.

I'm waiting to be impressed

·

I 'm issuing a challenge right now. If the Hoosiers want to impress me in their opening game tonight against Nicholls State, they have to accomplish a few easy tasks. In a matchup like this one, winning simply isn't enough. When you're playing a tiny school that happened to go 6-21 last year while playing in the Southland Conference, you need to make a statement. Nicholls State's football team came to Bloomington in early September and nearly pulled one of the biggest (and most embarrassing) upsets in school history. But luckily you can't run the triple option in basketball, so I think we're OK.

After 2 injury-filled years, Kline ready to make impact

·

During his freshman year, Sean Kline threw Assembly Hall into a frenzy with a between-the-legs slam that won him the Hoosier Hysteria dunk contest. In his junior year, Kline threw Assembly Hall into a frenzy of a different sort -- one of heckels and boos.

Old Oaken Rivals

·

Hoosier fans clad in black and red stormed the rain-soaked Memorial Stadium field after the game. They leapt out of the stands and made their way to one of the goalposts, pushing and tugging away at it in a mass of celebration. With a 13-7 victory, IU was able to weld its bronze block "I" onto the chain of the Old Oaken Bucket. That was four years ago.

Hoosiers swept away by No. 1 Fighting Illini

·

Early in a season, there are defining games that symbolize what kind of future lies ahead for a team. The IU hockey team experienced one of those games in a loss to the defending American Collegiate Hockey Association champion Friday night in Champaign, Ill.

Pujols tops Lee, Jones for NL MVP

·

NEW YORK -- Albert Pujols started his career with four startling seasons, equal or better than those of many Hall of Famers. Only Barry Bonds always did better -- until this year. Pujols won his first National League MVP award Tuesday, beating Andruw Jones in a close vote that didn't include Bonds, who missed most of the season because of a knee injury.

Socializing, snow bring IU Ski Club together

·

Although southern Indiana isn't known for its ski and snowboarding communities, the IU Ski Club manages to bring together winter recreation and social activity. "I love the Ski Club because everyone's so chill," sophomore Kiri Crane said. "It's just an awesome, laid back group of people that are all brought together by something we love: snow." The club always tries to have some type of an event, whether it is a barbecue, social party or a lake outing every two weeks. In addition to the events, the club also plans weekly outings to nearby ski resort Paoli Peaks. However, for the members of the club, nothing tops the yearly trip they take to a major ski and snowboarding resort.
