Field Hockey: No. 11 Iowa snaps IU's 10-game win streak in OT

The No. 8 IU field hockey team's winning streak is over. After 10 consecutive wins, the Hoosiers were defeated by No. 11 Iowa 2-1 in overtime. The loss is only the Hoosiers' second of the season, and their first since a Sept. 4 loss at No. 1 Wake Forest. IU's record now stands at 13-2 overall and 4-1 in the Big Ten. "Iowa played a great game," coach Amy Robertson said. "They contained us defensively and negated our speed."

Prep school standout changes commitment

Armon Bassett is no longer another Indiana high school basketball standout who slipped through IU's fingers. After losing recruiting battles for in-state stars Greg Oden, Josh McRoberts and Luke Zeller, IU coach Mike Davis nearly lost Bassett to Missouri in August. The former Terre Haute South High School standout had verbally committed to the Tigers but changed his mind after attending Hoosier Hysteria earlier this month.

Volleyball: Hoosiers end 7-game losing streak

The IU volleyball team snapped a seven-match losing streak with a five-game victory against Illinois Saturday after failing to regain the Monon Spike -- the traveling trophy between the two teams --against No. 17 Purdue Friday at University Gym.

Women's Soccer: IU puts the 'O' in Hoosier with 3-2 win

Although the IU women's soccer team has struggled offensively this season, it might have found its stride at just the right time. After being shut out Friday against Illinois, the Hoosiers broke out for three goals in a 3-2 victory against Iowa Sunday.

Houston: Texans have a problem

HOUSTON -- The Indianapolis Colts want their fast start to pave the way to a big finish. Peyton Manning was uncharacteristically sloppy at times, fumbled for the first time this season and was intercepted on a poorly thrown pass, but he did enough to lead Indianapolis to a 38-20 victory Sunday against the winless Houston Texans that gave the Colts their first 7-0 record.

IU loses 13th consecutive game to Ohio State, 41-10

Saturday's version of "The Rock" couldn't have been what IU coach Terry Hoeppner envisioned. Hoeppner and the IU football team were greeted by 52,866 Big Ten football fans Saturday, the sixth largest crowd in IU history, but an estimated 15,000 of those fans weren't clad in cream and crimson, but rather Buckeye scarlet and gray.

'ROCK'ED AND ROLLED

The IU offense entered Saturday's game against Ohio State averaging nearly 30 points and 250 passing yards a game. The Buckeye defense came in giving up an average of 15 points and 208 passing yards.

Hep, Hoosiers to be featured on ESPN

IU coach Terry Hoeppner has become a household name in Indiana. But by the end of the month, coach Hep will be on more than just billboards and T-shirts. ESPN will feature the IU football team in its mini-documentary "The Season," following coaches and players around during practices, games and off-the-field activities.

IU bidding for Big Ten's No. 2 seed

Although the IU men's soccer team held a 2-0 halftime advantage over Butler Wednesday night, head coach Mike Freitag was anything but content heading into the locker room. Freitag said he feels there have been times this season when players have not played up to the precedent set by former IU teams.

IU looks for success against D-I club foe

Vick's legs carry Virginia Tech to 28-7 Terp shelling

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Marcus Vick was too elusive, and the relentless defense of No. 3 Virginia Tech proved too tough to handle for a spirited Maryland team bent on revenge. Vick ran for a career-high 133 yards and a touchdown, and the unbeaten Hokies pulled away in the second half to a 28-9 victory Thursday night. Mike Imoh had two touchdowns for Virginia Tech (7-0, 4-0 Atlantic Coast Conference), which scored 21 straight points after halftime to keep alive its hopes of playing for the national championship in January. The Terrapins (4-3, 2-2) came in with a three-game winning streak and hopes of avenging a 55-6 defeat to the Hokies last November, but Vick wouldn't let it happen. Although he threw a career-high three interceptions _ all in the third quarter _ the little brother of Atlanta Falcons star Michael Vick averaged 8.3 yards per carry and completed 14 of 23 passes for 211 yards. His 8-yard touchdown run in the second quarter made it 7-0, and he directed scoring drives of 81, 99 and 37 yards in the second half. That was more than enough support for a defense that forced two turnovers and kept the Terrapins out of the end zone until Sam Hollenbach threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Derrick Fenner with 2:16 to go. Hollenbach was 14-of-30 for 158 yards and two interceptions, and Lance Ball had 75 yards rushing on 15 attempts. The Terrapins wore their alternate black jerseys for the second time this season, hoping for the same result as the last time: a 45-33 victory over Virginia on Oct. 1. The ploy didn't work, yet Maryland could take solace in putting forth a decent performance in front of a national television audience and a crowd of 54,838, the second-largest in school history.

Bids open to IU at ITA Midwest Regional

This weekend, the IU women's tennis team will have a chance to prove they can play with the best teams in the Midwest. The Hoosiers will head to the ITA Midwest Regional Oct. 20-25 in East Lansing, Mich. and were one of only three teams awarded eight spots in the tournament.

No. 8 IU taking streak on road to Iowa City

Hoosiers welcome Illini, Boilermakers

The IU women's volleyball team will welcome Illinois and Purdue this weekend in a battle with Big Ten rivals. The Boilers come into the match ranked No. 17, but the Hoosiers say they are ready for their in-state rival. "Purdue will be tough, especially with the enlistment of their solid freshman," assistant coach Matt Affolder said. "They might be difficult to defend, so this will really bring out passion between us and our biggest in-state rival."

With post-season looming, Hoosiers enter home stretch

With three games remaining in the regular season, the IU women's soccer team (6-8-1, 2-5 Big Ten) needs two wins to qualify for the Big Ten tournament. To some, that might cause a sense of panic. But the Hoosiers, who welcome Illinois (8-4-3, 4-2-1 Big Ten) and Iowa (2-10-4, 0-5-2 Big Ten) to Bill Armstrong Stadium this weekend, remain focused and steadfast.

Saturday sold out, but lawn seats available

For the first time this season, an IU home football game is sold out. To pack even more fans in "The Rock," Memorial Stadium officials are opening the north end zone lawn to fans without a ticket. Fans can buy $10 tickets that grant them admission to the lawn and services of the east concourse today at the Assembly Hall ticket office or at the stadium's east box office starting at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Hoosiers ready to shed underdog label

Maybe the underdog is in the eye of the beholder. A week after a loss to favored Iowa, the Hoosiers are still looking for their first chance at a Big Ten team upset. They might have their biggest opportunity of the year when No. 14 Ohio State comes to town Saturday, Just don't tell the Hoosiers they can't do it.

#1 This year we've got coach Hep It can't be reiterated enough: Hep helps win games. There is something different in the air. The IU campus has caught a crazy case of coach Hep, and students are loving it. The difference between this year and the previous 10 years is people believe the Hoosiers can win every game, even the one against Ohio State this weekend. What the coaches think, the players echo, and how the players play reverberates through the student body. In his press conference Tuesday, coach Hep was asked whether he was a program builder or a gameday coach. Hep replied that a coach cannot not be one without possessing the qualities of the other. Hep's already proving that he can be a program builder. Come Saturday, against the toughest opponent yet, we'll find out how good of a gameday coach he can be.

Pacers' Jackson says NBA dress code racist

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana guard Stephen Jackson believes the NBA's new ban on bling-bling is racially motivated but says he will abide by the rules. The NBA has announced that a dress code will go into effect at the start of the season. Players will be required to wear business-casual attire when involved in team or league business. They can't wear visible chains, pendants or medallions over their clothes.
