Jerry Rice retires from football after 20 seasons

DENVER -- Unwilling to be a bit player with the Broncos, Jerry Rice retired Monday, closing a 20-year career for the most productive receiver in NFL history. Rice, 42, made his decision during the weekend at home in San Francisco, then returned to Broncos headquarters and met with coach Mike Shanahan.

IU's Indianapolis connection

They've played soccer together on the same team since sixth grade and have already made history in the first match of the 2005 IU men's soccer season. Friday, the sophomore trio of goalkeeper Chris Munroe, and defenders Greg Stevning and Charley Traylor became the first group of teammates from the same high school graduating class to start and play in a match for the IU men's soccer team. Stevning and Traylor went to middle school together and still live together off-campus, with Munroe living just down the street. When the trio were seniors at North Central High School in Indianapolis, they won the 2002 Indiana High School State Soccer Championship. As the group stepped onto the field against Wake Forest University, their three-year journey from the high school's varsity squad to the Indiana Olympic Development Program and through the Dynamo Futbol Club team finally culminated.

Hardy, fellow freshmen wideouts 'wow' coach Hep with stellar play

Freshmen receivers Hardy and Marcus Thigpen led all Hoosier receivers with performances of 107 and 92 yards, respectively. Hardy became the first freshman receiver to gain more than 100 yards in a game since Oct. 10, 1998, when Levron Williams racked up 105 yards against Ohio State.

IU Football 2005: Optimism runs rampant

Hope springs eternal once more in Bloomington as the football team kicks off another season. But this year is different. Since arriving in January as the new head coach, the Terry Hoeppner PR machine has invaded our campus like cicadas on a hot summer day. Armed with optimism, a 48-24 record in his six seasons at Miami of Ohio and handfuls of Uncle Sam knockoff posters, coach Hep has promised to restore glory to an otherwise laughable decade of Hoosier football.

Pair of Mollys break IU's 3-game scoring drought as team earns 1st win of season

Four games. Two freshmen. One goal. Put it all together, and the IU women's soccer team has its first victory of the season, defeating Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, Sunday afternoon. After going scoreless in the first three games of the season, the Hoosiers (1-2-1) tallied their first goal when freshman midfielder Molly Beckwith found the back of the net off an assist from fellow freshman midfielder Molly Kruger. It would be all the team needed as the defense shut out the Cyclones for a 1-0 win.

Hayden's goal eerily reminiscent of semifinal winner

Last year John Michael Hayden flew through the 18-yard box hammering the ball with his head into the net off a cross from former Hoosier Danny O'Rourke, giving IU the 3-2 double overtime victory over Maryland in the national semifinal match. He did the same in Sunday's 4-0 win against Southern Methodist off a cross from senior midfielder Mike Ambersley. "Those same thoughts were going through my head as the ball was floating in there," Hayden said.

IU splits matches against Wake Forest, Applachian State

The IU field hockey team split a pair of matches in North Carolina this weekend, defeating Appalachian State University 1-0 Friday and falling to three-time defending national champions Wake Forest 4-2 Sunday. Senior midfielder Lesley Wiler provided all the offense the Hoosiers needed Friday in their victory over Appalachian State.

Hoosiers falter in 2 of 3 matches, defeat Loyola-Chicago

The IU volleyball team struggled early at this weekend's Bama Bash, dropping its first two matches before rebounding for a 3-1 win over Loyola University Chicago in the last match. The Hoosiers dropped their first two matches in the tournament in straight sets, first getting beat by Oklahoma 0-3 (28-30, 20-30, 22-30) and then losing to Alabama 0-3 (29-31, 21-30, 35-37).

Men's soccer wins adidas/IU Credit Union Classic

For the third consecutive season, the IU men's soccer team captured the season-opening a didas/IU Credit Union Classic. The No. 1 Hoosiers emerged as champions from a field that included three of the top teams in the country -- No. 7 Southern Methodist University, No. 10 Wake Forest and No. 16 Notre Dame. IU won the classic by defeating SMU 4-0 Sunday at Bill Armstrong Stadium on the strength of senior leadership.

Starting off on the right foot

When the first quarter ended Friday night and IU still didn't have an offensive first down, Hoosier fans may have been distraught, flashing back to mediocre seasons of years past. MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - The new-look IU Hoosiers liked the look of the final score Friday night, if not every play along the way. Blake Powers threw for three touchdowns in his first start to help IU beat Central Michigan 20-13 in Terry Hoeppner's debut as Hoosiers coach.

The wait is over

The long wait is over. For new head coach Terry Hoeppner and the IU football team, months of preparation, practice and press conferences culminate today in the team's first game at Central Michigan University. For returning players, the game serves as the beginning of a new chapter in their IU football stories. For Hoeppner, the game marks the beginning of a whole new one. "I can't wait," the first-year coach said. "When we get under the goalposts and run out onto the field, I'll be getting goosebumps."

Water polo player injured in accident

A junior defender on the IU water polo team suffered a fractured spine after a car hit her while riding her bike Wednesday, according to Bloomington Police Department reports. Emily Schmitt, 21, was riding westbound on 10th Street Wednesday evening when she was hit by a 1994 Chevrolet Tiara van coming up behind her about 500 feet east of Grandview Drive.

IU heads to Alabama Invitational tourney

After splitting matches against Indiana State and Western Kentucky this past weekend, the IU women's volleyball team looks for its first away victory at the Alabama Invitational. First up on Friday will be Oklahoma at 10 a.m. followed by Alabama at 7 p.m. The tournament will continue the following day as the Hoosiers aim to defeat Loyola University-Chicago.

Men's, women's teams hold Community 5K

High expectations surround Big Ten
