Manning, Cowher, Roethlisberger all honored with Sporting News awards

ST. LOUIS -- Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, who threw a record 49 touchdown passes this season, has been named NFL player of the year for the second-straight season by the Sporting News. The St. Louis-based publication also Tuesday named Pittsburgh's Bill Cowher coach of the year and Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger rookie of the year.

Rudy Tomjanovich considering resigning as Lakers coach after only 1 season

LOS ANGELES -- Rudy Tomjanovich is considering resigning as Los Angeles Lakers coach because of health reasons, a team spokesman said Tuesday. ESPN.com reported that Tomjanovich would step down following Tuesday night's game against Portland. Spokesman John Black said that would not be the case. "He's considering several options and resigning is one of them. That decision has not been made," Black said. "There won't be an announcement tonight.

Owens says he 'will play on Sunday'

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Terrell Owens strolled onto the field, claiming a podium near the 25-yard line. It would have been more appropriate to put him right in the middle of the field. T.O. was clearly in his comfort zone Tuesday at the Super Bowl's media extravaganza -- the center of attention, the star of the show, the guy making all the news. And say this about the Philadelphia Eagles' All-Pro receiver: He didn't leave anyone in suspense.

Emmitt Smith denies report that he will retire from league this week

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Emmitt Smith denied a report Tuesday that he will retire later this week. ESPN.com, citing unidentified "confidants" of the star running back, reported that Smith will retire Thursday in Jacksonville, site of this year's Super Bowl. Smith spent the last two seasons with Arizona after 13 years with Dallas.

Florida ripe for IU recruiting

The Sunshine State continues to smile on football coach Terry Hoeppner and his coaching staff as running back Demetrius McCray is the latest to join the cream and crimson for 2005. McCray, a Seffner, Fla., native, marks the fourth commitment from Florida for the Hoosiers thus far. The six-foot 180-pound running back starred at Armwood High School, leading his team to class 4A back-to-back state championships.

Owens practices for first time since injury

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - T.O. is almost a go. Terrell Owens, the Philadelphia Eagles' All-Pro receiver, practiced Monday for the first time since injuring his ankle last month, moving closer toward returning for the Super Bowl.

Losing streak continues for IU

The first half couldn't have gone better for the Hoosiers. IU made No. 11 Michigan State slow the tempo while limiting them to 18 points, en route to trailing by just one at the break.

IU wins every match against 2 teams this weekend

Twelve singles matches. Six doubles matches. 30 sets of unbeaten tennis. The IU men's tennis team dominated its pair of home matches Saturday, never surrendering even a set to the opposition, en route to two 7-0 victories over Murray State and Butler. Head Coach Ken Hydinger glowed about his players Saturday.

IU fails to meet goals in Relays

IU's track team showed its first signs of struggle this weekend as it competed against 16 other teams at the Hoosier Relays. The increased level of competition weeded out the strongest IU competitors despite a lack of recognizable names in collegiate athletics. IU advanced to the finals in nine out of 15 events Saturday after a long night of preliminaries Friday for a total of four victories.

Streak ends at Penn State

Despite great performances from both the swimming and diving teams, the streak of five wins came to end against Penn State. The IU women's swimming and diving program fell to the Nittany Lions 211-158 in a two-part competition Friday and Saturday at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.

North Carolina brings 2 losses for IU

IU's No. 29 ranked women's tennis team lost two matches in North Carolina this weekend to No.8 Duke University and No. 15 University of North Carolina.

17th time's a charm: IU finally beats Michigan

The IU water polo team set out this weekend to do something it hadn't done in its last 16 attempts -- beat Michigan. That was accomplished when the No. 11 Hoosiers upset the No. 9 Wolverines 7-6 Saturday at the Michigan Invitational at Ann Arbor. The team finished the weekend with a 2-1 record.

Sosa trade waiting approval CHICAGO -- Sammy Sosa was once as popular a fixture at Wrigley Field as the ivy-covered brick walls and the ancient scoreboard hanging over the center field bleachers.

In 2nd game back Jackson, Pacers fall to Detroit by 12

Chauncey Billups scored 20 points and Tayshaun Prince had 16 points and seven rebounds as the Detroit Pistons used a balanced scoring attack to defeat the Indiana Pacers 88-76 Thursday night. It was the second meeting between the teams since Nov. 19, when Pacers players brawled with Pistons fans after Ben Wallace shoved Ron Artest. Both games have been in Indianapolis, and both times the Pistons have won. The teams face each for the last time in the regular season March 25 at Detroit. That will be Indiana's first trip back to the Palace of Auburn Hills since the fight.

IU to face Michigan in season opener

The IU water polo team is looking to build on an impressive 20-9 record last year as it begins its season this weekend at the Michigan Invitational in Ann Arbor. The Hoosiers finished the season by placing third at the College Water Polo Association Eastern Championships and ranked No. 13 in the country. Thirteen letter winners return from last year's team, including three All Conference selections in seniors Krista Peterson, Kandace Waldthaler and Jessica Goldner. Peterson is also a two-time honorable mention All-American.
