UConn wins 2nd national title in 2 days

·

NEW ORLEANS -- First the men, now the women. Make it a double for UConn. With the incomparable Diana Taurasi leading the way, Connecticut's women completed a championship sweep for the school by beating Tennessee 70-61 Tuesday night for their third straight title. So now there's a new Titletown: tiny Storrs, Conn., the Huskies' home. The victory by the women followed UConn's win over Georgia Tech in the men's championship game Monday night, making Connecticut the first Division I school to sweep both titles. "Unbelievable," UConn coach Geno Auriemma said. "It's so mind-boggling. An unbelievable accomplishment for a school." It was the fifth title overall for the women and it came at the expense of the only other school that has won three straight championships. Tennessee and coach Pat Summitt still lead all teams with six NCAA titles, but Auriemma and the Huskies are closing fast.

Huskies hustle Ga. Tech for title

·

SAN ANTONIO -- The Connecticut Huskies really do have it all -- the All-America center, the flashy guards, the coach who gets everything right, and now a national title won with ease. Led by 24 points from Emeka Okafor and 21 from Ben Gordon, the Huskies outclassed Georgia Tech 82-73 Monday night to win the championship many predicted they'd get from the very start of the season. They looked like champions from beginning to end, running when they wanted, controlling the middle at other times, grabbing just about every loose ball and making the Yellow Jackets look ordinary. UConn became the first team since the 1996 Kentucky Wildcats to win the title after being ranked first in the preseason. The Huskies wound up on top of the college basketball world, thanks to a tall, quick, deep and talented roster put together by Calhoun.

Hoosiers go 2-2 for the weekend, Nottger gets 100th win

·

IU saw its first Big Ten action this weekend in back-to-back losses to Michigan before getting two victories against Bowling Green on Sunday. The two Hoosier victories gave IU coach Sara Hayes Nottger her 100th victory at IU. "To average over 25 wins in four years, I think that's pretty good but it's just a testament to the kids that I have had thus far in my career and hopefully there are many, many more to come as we continue to build this program here," Nottger said. The weekend started off on a sour note as the Wolverines of Michigan came into town as the No. 9 team in the nation and upset on the minds of all IU's players.
