A tough goodbye

Before the game was even over, the look on senior forward A.J. Moye's face summed up the entire Big Ten season of IU basketball. And even after thousands chanted Moye's infamous "A.J. Moye" cheer and a few started up a cheer for senior center George Leach, the emotions still weren't satisfying for Moye. Sad. Disappointed. Frustrated. All words Moye used to describe his feelings after IU's (13-14, 7-9) 70-52 loss to Wisconsin (21-6, 12-4) senior night.

Stanford handed first loss of season SEATTLE -- Top-ranked Stanford lost for the first time this season, falling 75-62 to unranked Washington Saturday. Tre Simmons scored 16 points to help Washington end the Cardinal's effort to complete the first 18-0 season in Pac-10 Conference history. Thursday night, the Cardinal rallied to beat Washington State with a last-second shot.

Athletes take last shot at qualifying for NCAAs Notre Dame's Alex Wilson Invitational served as the final shot at qualifying for next weekend's NCAA Indoor Championships for several men's track athletes. Freshman sprinter David Neville took home the Hoosiers' sole victory from the meet, winning the 200-meters in a time of 21.08, a personal indoor best.

Hoosiers drop Big Ten opener to Northwestern

When the Hoosiers took the court Friday against Northwestern in their Big Ten opener, it once again turned into a "Maalox Moment," as the match wasn't decided until the end. But the Hoosiers fell short to the Wildcats 4-3, to fall to 5-5 on the year and 0-1 in the Big Ten.

All-around effort gives IU sweep

Led by solid pitching and an offensive outburst, the Hoosiers (7-5) extended their winning streak to six games after sweeping their series with Cleveland State (0-3) this weekend. The sweep also enabled the Hoosiers to move above .500 for the first time this season.

Seniors say goodbye

The IU men's basketball team is going to end its Big Ten season playing the same Wisconsin team it opened against -- and lost to by 34 points Jan. 6. It's a game senior center George Leach didn't even want to talk about after IU's win over Michigan Wednesday night. The game will be one of the most emotional nights of his basketball career, playing for the last time in Assembly Hall. "Nobody wants to play in their final home game," Leach said. "Of course it will be sad." IU's other senior to see action in Assembly Hall for the last time is forward A.J. Moye. Moye said he wishes he could play at Indiana for ten more years. "I wish it was like the NBA or something," Moye said. "I love this crowd, man. I think they just respect my heart and my effort."

Ravens acquire Terrell Owens BALTIMORE -- Four-time Pro Bowl receiver Terrell Owens was traded to the Baltimore Ravens by San Francisco Thursday after a paperwork error prevented him from becoming a free agent. Owens, who quarreled with coaches, teammates and opponents during the last few seasons, was given permission by the 49ers to seek a deal after his agent failed to file a document voiding the final years of his contract. He gives Baltimore the top receiver it has been lacking for years, even in 2000, when it won the Super Bowl. Owens was among several players required to file for free agency by a deadline recently moved up 10 days for players who signed their contracts before the league's 2001 collective bargaining agreement went into effect. Owens has spent all eight of his NFL seasons with the 49ers, who drafted him in the third round in 1996.

The meet, which is known as a "Last Chance Meet," gives swimmers and divers who haven't already qualified for the NCAA Championships by meeting qualifying times during their conference meets one last chance to do so.

Team to play last doubleheader

Climbing the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's top 75 rankings, IU coach Lin Loring's No. 24 women's tennis team returns to Bloomington to play their last doubleheader and final pre-conference home matches of the season. The Hoosiers (6-3) will play host to DePaul and Ball State University Saturday at the IU Tennis Center. Playing unranked teams for the first time since early January, the Hoosiers return from a blowout win at Marquette and a hard fought 5-2 loss at Notre Dame as they look to take care of business at home, this time as the favorite to win.

IU opens against Wildcats

IU looks to finish up its five-match homestand on a positive note by starting the Big Ten season against No. 44 Northwestern (9-4, 1-1) at 5 p.m. today at the IU Tennis Center. Thus far on the homestand, the Hoosiers have split four matches, with victories over Ball State and North Carolina State, and will be looking to finish strong.

Hoosiers set for this weekend at Big Ten Tournament

With the regular season in the rear view mirror and future goals in sight, members of the IU wrestling team look to book their flights to St. Louis in two weeks for the NCAA Championships. First, a little business will have to be tended to, as the team will compete this weekend at the annual Big Ten Championships in Columbus, Ohio. The tournament begins at 11 a.m. Saturday and concludes Sunday when the final in each weight class will be determined. Only the top seven finishers in each weight division will move on to nationals, meaning some quality grapplers will be left watching at home.

Team ready to tee off in paradise

This weekend, the IU men's golf team will be on the island of St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, home to numerous beaches, perpetual sunshine and 80 degree weather, making it a virtual paradise. But the last thing the Hoosiers have on their minds is an early start to spring break as they prepare for the St. Croix Collegiate Classic, which begins today and runs through Sunday.

IU advances in conference tourney

After having IU's hard-fought lead whittled down to only one point with five seconds left in the first half, Hoosier sophomore Cyndi Valentin quickly dribbled up the court and sent a blind shot into the air from behind the arc with no time left on the clock. The shot bounced off of the glass, went around the rim and dropped through the ring, giving the Hoosiers the four point advantage at the half. From then on, the Hoosiers never looked back.

Hoosiers have clean-slate for Big Tens

New game, "new" season, same old opponents. The Hoosiers will have a chance to advance to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three years if they are able to defeat four Big Ten conference opponents, starting with the Wisconsin Badgers. IU will face Wisconsin in the opening game of the Big Ten Tournament at 3 p.m. today. The Hoosiers come into the game with an 11-16 overall record and 4-12 record in Big Ten contests. While the Hoosiers' anemic .250 winning percentage leaves a lot to be desired, their opponents have had an extremely similar run in the regular season, finishing with a 10-16 overall record and a identical 4-12 conference record. During the regular season, the Hoosiers traded victories with the Badgers, with Wisconsin taking the most recent contest 66-62.

Tenured coach earns associate coaching rank

Winning four Big Ten titles in 12 years as an IU tennis coach would be a highlight to any head coach's resume. Add to it, a two-time conference coach of the year honos for both men and women's programs, in addition to decades of collegiate tennis experience, and you've got a resume fit to send off for any head tennis coaching position in the country. But IU's newly named associate head coach, Ramiro Azcui, is proud to be just that -- and in doing so has been an integral part of continuing IU's lineage of successful squads.

Strickland, Moye, Leach lead team with career-high nights

Three IU players had career nights in three different categories as the Hoosiers pulled out their first home win in over a month Wednesday as they defeated Michigan, 61-56. Sophomore guard Marshall Strickland scored a career-high 21 points on 7-17 shooting, 5-10 behind the arc, to lead the Hoosiers (13-13, 7-8 Big Ten). Senior forward A.J. Moye had 15 rebounds, and senior center George Leach was a presence on the defensive end with seven blocks. "I thought Marshall Strickland was tremendous for their team," Michigan coach Tommy Amaker said. "They made eight threes, and one of our points of emphasis was trying to defend the three-point line, and it doesn't look like we did a good job looking at the percentage they shot."

Hoosier hiatus ends with 61-56 victory

It has been since the Purdue game Jan. 27. One month and five days is how long Hoosier fans had to wait for a win in Assembly Hall. Wednesday night they got it when IU (13-13, 7-8 Big Ten) beat Michigan (16-10, 7-8) 61-56. "We just wanted to get that winning feeling back," sophomore guard Marshall Strickland said. "After you lose a couple of games, everybody gets down. The mood kind of gets down. We just want to get the fans excited again, and get everybody excited about basketball, and we're not done yet."

Rec Sports reinstates intramural swim meet

Thirty-three swimmers turned out for the first intramural swim meet since 1997 Saturday at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center in the Student Recreational Sports Center. This event used to take place annually, but because of lack of participation, RecSports cut the event. But this year, the intramural swim meet is back by popular demand, said Assistant Director for Intramurals Josh Downing. "We used to have this event all the time," Downing said. "'97 was the last time we had it as an intramural event. We stopped it due to lack of participation, but last year, a group of students came to our intramural sports council and recommended we do this. Then the intramural sports council came to us and said, 'Hey, we should do this,' so that is how this event came about today."
