IU wins 3, loses 1 in San Diego

·

The Hoosiers traveled to San Diego beginning with play on Saturday against No. 15 UC-Irvine, in a match that featured another come-from behind victory by IU coach Barry King's squad. UCI jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first half but IU matched them at three a piece right before the break. In the second half, the match seesawed back and forth until the final minute of play when freshman Kristin Zernicke netted the game winning goal off an assist from fellow freshman Janis Pardy. Saturday afternoon the Hoosiers battled No. 4 Long Beach State. IU stayed in the match throughout most of the first half and third period, and was down only two goals with one period left to play. Unfortunately, LBSU came out with more intensity in the last period of play, scoring three times while holding IU scoreless for a final of 9-4.

Basketball to Indiana is what apple pie is to the United States. Nothing better symbolizes our state than the orange leather ball. But is Indiana so obsessed with basketball to forget about this country's most popular sport?

Heart-breaker in double overtime

·

Even a miracle tip-in to send it to overtime and a long three-pointer to send it to double-overtime couldn't save the Hoosiers Saturday as they fell 84-82 to the Iowa Hawkeyes. Iowa sophomore guard Jeff Horner scored on a lay-up with 1.6 seconds left in the second extra period. The loss is the third straight for IU (11-9, 5-4 Big Ten), its second in a row at home. "It was just a back and forth game, and it came down to who wanted it more, and I think they just outplayed us," IU sophomore guard Marshall Strickland said. "Iowa wanted it more today. It was back and forth, and we had opportunity after opportunity to put them away, we just couldn't do it. They out-fought us today." The Hoosiers managed just two points in the second overtime, but the game was still within its reach. IU came up with a stop on a missed shot by Iowa senior guard Brody Boyd. But Horner pulled down the offensive rebound with 17 seconds left, pulled it out and then drove for the winning points for Iowa (12-8, 5-4).

Week off helps Hoosiers in pair of wins

·

If there was any rust from the week layoff, the No. 51 Hoosiers didn't show it as they cruised to victories over Indiana State, 6-1, and Murray State, 7-0 Saturday and Sunday at the IU Tennis Center.

2-day meet prepares IU for conference races

The need to heat up

·

Last week at this time, the Hoosiers found themselves in a great position in the Big Ten. They were tied at the top of the standings at 5-1 and had six of their last 10 games at home. But IU has dropped two-straight games, one at Michigan State and the home contest Tuesday against Illinois. Now the Hoosiers need a win against Iowa Saturday to stay alive in the Big Ten race. "We still believe we can win," sophomore guard Marshall Strickland said. "We think it's going to be tough for anybody to come in here and win against us. We're going into this game with a lot of confidence."

IU looking forward to San Diego Invitational

·

With two weeks off since last playing at the Michigan Invitational, IU coach Barry King has the girls ready for a highly competitive weekend in San Diego. Having already faced three top 20 teams in Ann Arbor, Mich., to start the season, King believes his team is well-prepared for the UCSD Invitational. "Playing in a couple of comeback wins and a tough loss against Michigan has hardened us," said King. "We are now better prepared for the level of play awaiting us in San Diego."

Purdue meet could save year

·

With a disappointing regular season coming to a close, the IU men's swimming and diving team has renewed incentive to get that competitive fire going before the Big Ten and NCAA Championships begin in March. The reason? Arch rival Purdue will be coming to town this Saturday.

Penn State dominates IU

·

Led by senior guard Kelly Mazzante's 24 points, No. 5 Penn State (18-3, 10-0 Big Ten) pulled away in the second half for a 66-49 win over IU (10-11, 3-7 Big Ten). Mazzante missed only one shot in the second half as the Lady Lions continued their best-ever start in Big Ten play. Tenacious defense and the free throw shooting of junior forward Jenny DeMuth kept the Hoosiers within four of Penn State at halftime. DeMuth was a perfect eight for eight from the charity stripe in the first half, and Mazzante, the Big Ten's all-time leading scorer, was held to seven points.

Hoosiers prep for Big Ten's with Indiana Invitational

·

The IU women's track and field team competes in the Indiana Invitational today and tomorrow at the Harry Gladstein Fieldhouse. Twenty-six different universities or track clubs are represented in the Indiana Invitational with either full team squads or select individuals competing. Last weekend, IU traveled to Columbia, Mo., and competed in the Tiger Classic at the University of Missouri. This meet did not keep a team score, but junior sprinter Ara Towns earned IU's first NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.43 seconds, which also set the Hearnes Center Fieldhouse record.

No place like home for IU

·

The drive to the Big Ten Indoor Championships begins this weekend at Harry Gladstein Fieldhouse as the Hoosiers host the two-day Indiana Invitational, beginning Friday and concluding Saturday. The meet serves as a simulation of the Big Ten Indoor meet, particularly by adding qualifying rounds and preliminary heats to several events, thereby spreading the competition over two days.
