Quest for crown begins

·

The IU men's soccer program has been notorious for producing champion-caliber teams and it will get a shot at earning another Big Ten title this weekend. Fresh off their conference regular season title, the top-seeded Hoosiers play the No. 5 seed Wisconsin today at 5 p.m. at Armstrong Stadium in their quest for their 10th tournament championship. IU has a 18-3 all-time record in conference tournament games, including a flawless 3-0 mark versus the Badgers. To date, the Hoosiers (11-3-4, 5-0-1 Big Ten) have won nine consecutive games. IU's last lost was Sept. 18 to Notre Dame, 1-0 in double-overtime in South Bend and their last tie was Oct. 2. But coach Jerry Yeagley has his players' eyes focused on Wisconsin, which defeated Ohio State, 2-0 in the opening round of the Big Ten tournament Thursday.

Kickoff returners turn to music in down time

·

When opposing teams kick off to the IU football team, they're sending the ball toward more than student athletes or football players. Waiting to receive it on one side is freshman Lance Bennett, IU's leading returner with 384 yards, who is also a gifted musician who co-penned Will Smith's hit "Black Suits Comin' (Nod Ya Head)".

Big Ten Tournament returns to Bloomington, begins today

·

After a five-year hiatus, the Big Ten Tournament makes its way back to Bloomington and Bill Armstrong Stadium this year, marking the fourth time IU has hosted the conference tournament and the first time since 1997. The winner receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. IU coach Jerry Yeagley said he views the conference tournament as preparation for the Tournament for his team. "We like to look upon the Big Ten Tournament the same as the NCAA Tournament," Yeagley said. "Every game is the championship game. We have to be prepared though. Upsets have taken place." The Big Ten Tournament boasts a strong field, with three teams recording 11 or more wins. Michigan enters the tournament with the most victories, as they have 13. But IU was able to win the regular season title by going undefeated through the conference season.

Davis ready to see improvement in exhibition

·

Last Friday, the IU men's basketball team barely pulled off an overtime win in their first exhibition game against Athletes in Action. Their two-point victory, 70-68, didn't come easy. "We probably should have lost the game by 15," IU coach Mike Davis said. "I see that now watching the tape."

Hoosiers battle each other on video game gridiron

·

They're a staple in college campuses across the country. Football video games have invaded the college culture dating from Nintendo's Tecmo Bowl in the 1980s to EA Sports NCAA Football 2004 currently.

Players upbeat after second win

·

For only the second time all year, IU football players could speak Sunday at the team meeting. When IU loses, players aren't allowed to talk, but Saturday's 17-14, come-from-behind victory over the Fighting Illini reinstated player speaking rights and elevated team spirits.

Distances put IU at advantage

·

The NCAA regional and national meets are the only two left for the No. 11 men's cross country team this year. Heading into these meets, the Hoosiers believe they have a distinct advantage over the other competitors, an advantage they have not had yet this year.

·

INDIANAPOLIS -- When Tony Dungy's teams have taken double-digit lead, opponents usually are left scrambling. Not this season.

Runner steps up in big meet

·

At the Big Ten Cross Country Championships Nov. 2, the unranked women's cross country team finished fourth, edging then-No. 18 Wisconsin, and finishing behind then-No. 10 Michigan, No. 6 Michigan State, and No. 19 Penn State, which finished first through third, respectively. However, it was sophomore Larra Overton who finished fourth for IU in the Big Ten Championship, after IU coach Judy Wilson said, before the race, that she did not believe the team could finish higher than fifth. Overton entered the Big Ten Cross Country Championship with no prior experience running in this meet. She competed in two meets this season: the 5K Indiana Intercollegiates Sept. 19 finishing in a time of 18:44, and the 6K Roy Griak Invitation Sept. 27 with a finishing time 23:00. In her freshman season, Overton competed in four meets and finished second for IU in the Purdue Open with a 5K time of 19:26.6.

·

Jaguars 28, Colts 23 JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Fred Taylor delivered the punishment he promised and the Jacksonville Jaguars got a win not many people expected. Taylor scored a 32-yard touchdown with 1:08 left Sunday to lift the Jaguars to a surprising 28-23 victory over the Indianapolis Colts.

Hoosiers snap 11-game Big Ten losing streak

·

It's been an interesting week for junior Matt LoVecchio. Seven days removed from being forced to sit because of lingering effects of a concussion, LoVecchio scrambled for eight yards and dove head first across the goal line with 24 seconds remaining to score the winning touchdown in IU's 17-14 win over Illinois.

Hoosiers go slumpbusting

·

So, maybe it's understandable that IU's 17-14 win over Illinois didn't cause the Memorial Stadium crowd of 24,102 to charge the field and rip out the goal posts. But for a team that had lost 11 straight in the Big Ten, it must have felt like the weight of the world was lifted from their shoulders.

Big Ten season champs

·

Trailing 2-0 with 25 minutes left in the game most thought IU's 44-game Big Ten unbeaten streak, eight-game win streak and conference championship aspirations would all come crashing down. Most thought that -- except the Hoosiers who, Saturday night, in IU coach Jerry Yeagley's final regular season home game, came roaring back with three straight goals, beating Penn State 3-2 and capturing the Big Ten regular season championship for the eighth-straight season. IU (11-3-4, 5-0-1 Big Ten) earned the No. 1 seed in the Big Ten tournament and will play the winner of Ohio State/Wisconsin 5 p.m., Friday. "There was not a player at halftime on our team that was thinking we couldn't be the Big Ten champs," Yeagley said. "They didn't sit there and mope with their heads down. When we came in at half and the main thing was to get their minds off the first half, we talked about the character we developed over the last eight games, the confidence we developed, and we go out and not try to do it all at once.
