Bonds away!

·

Six hundred sixty one and counting. Like Barry Bonds or not, 661 home runs is still quite a remarkable feat, making him third all-time on the homerun list. I can't think of anything I've done worth remembering 661 times -- well, maybe there are two things (get imaginative, I ain't getting fired for the sake of a joke).

A Phil-y tale ending

·

I can't shoot under 100. I can't drive the ball straight. I can't putt on level greens. I can't differentiate my irons -- heck, I can't even be a member at some golf clubs. I don't wear golf shoes. I don't own my own clubs. I don't even know how to comprehend a handicap, let alone read a green -- heck, I couldn't find the next tee with a map and a compass.

IU looks to end losing streak

·

Through the first six games in the Big Ten schedule, IU has yet to defeat a conference opponent. After promising performances against tough non-conference foes such as Nebraska and Harvard, the Hoosiers' (23-23, 0-6) start to the Big Ten season is certainly upsetting.

Czech Republic native leading Hoosiers at No. 1 spot

·

It started for junior Jakub Praibis when he was four years old, hitting a ball against the wall. By age seven, he was on the court. Now, the 21-year-old native of Litomerice, Czech Republic, has emerged as one of the nation's best tennis players, leading the No. 68 Hoosiers (10-8, 4-2). Praibis, in his second year playing No. 1 singles for IU, has compiled a record of 12-5 this season, including five victories over ranked players. Praibis' career record at IU is 42-20.

Rivals bring tough competition

·

Preconceived notions can go a long way. IU rowing coach Steve Peterson should know. He once described his team as one that just won't quit or succumb to the title of underdog.

Running back to the action

Two years ago, Hoosier running back Yamar Washington completed one of the better seasons for a Hoosier freshman back, earning Big Ten All-Freshman honors from The Sporting News.

if the jacket fits

·

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Phil Mickelson in a green jacket -- even he had a hard time believing it. The final leg in his odyssey to win a major championship came down to an 18-foot putt Sunday, the kind Mickelson had grown weary of watching others make as he stood to the side. This time, the last chance belonged to him, a birdie putt that kept him in suspense to the very end. It rolled toward the cup, swirled around the left edge and dropped in. Mickelson leapt as high as he could and threw both arms in the air, kissed the ball he plucked from the cup and tossed it into a delirious crowd that felt the same way.
