Hoosiers pleased with play despite loss

·

INDIANAPOLIS -- The women's basketball team was looking for the ultimate upset over 6th ranked Purdue Saturday in the RCA Dome. A repeat of last year's victory over the Boilermakers would have been the perfect way to prove they were a team worth competing with. While the final score was in Purdue's favor 51-53, it turned out to be a loss that showed IU can compete. "I really like where my team is at right now," coach Kathi Bennett said. "We started coming together, and it's a positive step for us."

Down to the wire win in 'Dome'

·

INDIANAPOLIS - It appeared as if the IU men's basketball team had the game under control. After scary moments of lost leads, waning offensive moments and blown game plans, the Hoosiers seemed to be in the clear against Purdue. But the theme of Saturday's "Duel in the Dome" was fighting, and the Boilermakers intended to do that to the final buzzer.

Freshman scorer becoming go-to guy

·

Last season IU lost to the University of Michigan in the American Collegiate Hockey Association national semifinals. The final horn sounded the end of the Hoosiers season, and the end of IU's highest-scoring line in the 34-year history of IU hockey. One member of that line, Bryan Grant, left with the single-season goals, assists and points record and is currently second all-time at IU in those same categories.

The rivalry everyone knows about

·

To some sports teams, playing a rival is an exciting and fun game, a victory that feels better than any other. In Indiana however, it's even more than that. The Indiana-Purdue rivalry is one of the most heated and talked about in the Big Ten.

Jump shot legend a Hoosier

·

One of the most basic functions in the game of basketball is the jump shot. Without this weapon, the game would still be grounded in its original roots of underhanded shots, which date back to the sport's beginnings in 1891 with Dr. James Naismith.

Rivalry gets another chapter

·

Saturday, Dec. 7, the women's basketball team knocked the Georgetown Hoyas down from an undefeated 5-0. Four days later, they put a stop to the 15 game home winning streak of the women's team at North Texas. It only seems right that their next victory should come against Purdue.

IU, Purdue set for 'Duel in the Dome'

·

An IU-Purdue basketball game has always meant a battle for bragging rights. The level of play has always been intense and, on occasion, a player or two has lost his cool. Whether the game is at Assembly Hall or Mackey Arena, the fans are always rabid and the stadium is always packed.

Toughest portion of schedule still remains

·

After finals wrap up next week, most IU students will be heading home to their families for a few weeks to relax and take a break from all the hustle and bustle of school. But for the men's swimming and diving team, they will have about a week break and then will return to school on Dec. 28 to begin training for the toughest part of the season.

2002 season 'just the beginning'

·

Coming off of a dismal 8-20 last season and a ninth place finish in the Big Ten, the Hoosier volleyball squad had a lot of rebuilding to do. Yet 20 wins, three All-Big Ten team members and a NCAA Tournament bid later, the IU reconstruction came through with flying colors.

Season not a total loss for IU

Entering this season, IU (15-3-3) had high hopes of returning to the National Championship and winning the game they lost last year. But these hopes were dashed when they played University of Connecticut in the third round of the NCAA tournament.

·

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida quarterback Rex Grossman is still deciding whether to leave college for the NFL or stay with the Gators for his senior season. "I actually haven't made up my mind yet," he said Tuesday. Grossman, a junior who was Indiana's 1998 high school Mr. Football at Bloomington South, also said he probably won't submit his name to the NFL Draft Advisory Board, which informs players where they will likely be drafted. Grossman said he has information from last year that he can rely on.

Future ticket fiascoes can be prevented

·

I'll never forget my first game at Assembly Hall. Defending National Champion Michigan State came into the Hall sporting a 23 game winning streak that seemed poised to continue with only seconds remaining to play. And then, just before the horn sounded, Kirk Haston drove a three-point dagger into the Spartans' hearts and sent the place into delirium.
