Aggressive play sets tone

·

Five fouls in a NCAA basketball game will get a player ejected. Committing a penalty in a hockey game will relegate a player to the penalty box. Offensive holding in a football game will push a player back ten yards. Most coaches will preach the avoidance of such blunders. Don't tell that to the women's soccer coach, Mick Lyon.

Rotten NFL inspires guilt

·

The term "guilty pleasure" is usually brought up in regards to something entertainment-related and something you wouldn't be willing to divulge in mixed company.

Change pays off

Three years ago, if someone would have told Molly Pulkrabek that by her senior season she would be a star goalkeeper on the IU field hockey team, she probably would have laughed in their face. Pulkrabek, from Barrington, Ill., came to IU as a soccer goalie for the Hoosiers, and played her freshman season on the squad. But when field hockey coach Amy Robertson started the program during Pulkrabek's sophomore year, she made the switch from shin guards to hockey sticks. Pulkrabek said her soccer background has helped her immensely in field hockey.

Phariss leads young team

·

Veteran leadership is a quality that does not appear in any boxscore, but without it no team can function. On a squad that features three freshmen and sophomores in its top five, IU needs a veteran presence to bring all of its parts together. Despite their youth, the No. 23 ranked Hoosiers are mature and are making progress toward Nationals, including a convincing victory at Friday's Indiana Intercollegiates. Junior Bart Phariss provides the team with a central veteran presence, said coach Robert Chapman.

Offense clicks in Big Ten opener

·

Following the Hoosiers game against Hartwick last weekend, coach Jerry Yeagley warned that the floodgates would open soon, and IU's offense would roll over someone. That someone happened to be Michigan State, and the Hoosier offense opened up less than a minute into the game and washed the Spartans away in the Big Ten conference opener.

Freshman making early impact

·

In Saturday's 39-29 win over Central Michigan, IU was led by a strong defensive effort in the second half. The Hoosier defense is a very young squad with several freshmen getting serious playing time. One of those freshman is John Kerr, who had eight tackles Saturday. Kerr is making an immediate impact. He started the season as the outside linebacker but has done the most damage since moving to middle linebacker. Despite being a little undersized, the 6-foot, 240-pound Kerr always seems to be around the ball.

Hoosiers on a roll heading into Big Ten

·

The volleyball team took first place this weekend in the IU Credit Union tournament, beating Central Michigan and Butler and upsetting the No. 30 ranked Louisville Cardinals. IU extended their winning streak to five games heading into conference play Wednesday night against Ohio State. In the opener Friday night, Central Michigan took a 28-25 lead on a late 5-0 run. But, IU quashed the rally, as the Hoosiers scored the next four points en route to a 34-32 victory in game one.

Rain can't stop Hoosier runners from top finish

·

Severe weather tried unsuccessfully to ruin the afternoon for the Indiana Intercollegiates cross country meet Friday afternoon. Although tornado warnings highlighted the day for most of central Indiana, the story at the IU cross country course was the dominant effort put forth by the men's team. The team won both the team and individual titles.

IU shuts out Golden Gophers

·

The Hoosiers faced weird weather and feisty opponents this weekend but dealt with it skillfully and got off to a great start to the Big Ten season. IU (4-2-1, 1-0-1) beat Minnesota 1-0 in a game that had a rainy first half and a sunny second.

Hoosiers get statement win against Michigan State Spartans

·

East Lansing, Mich. -- The IU men's soccer team made a statement to the rest of the Big Ten conference on Sunday in East Lansing, Mich. The Hoosiers are back to defend their six-year run atop the Big Ten regular season standings. Despite a sluggish start offensively, the No. 9 ranked Hoosiers had posted a 4-1-2 record against stiff competition.

Fumble turns game around for IU

·

With 10:28 remaining in the third quarter, the Hoosiers looked like a prizefighter hanging on the ropes, bracing for Central Michigan's knockout blow. Senior quarterback Gibran Hamdan had just thrown an interception to Central Michigan sophomore free safety James King, giving the Chippewas the ball at the IU 15-yard line and looking to build on a 29-16 lead.

Hoosiers battle back for win

·

With about 10:00 left in the third quarter, things were not looking good for the Hoosiers. Already trailing 29-13 to Central Michigan, the Chippewas picked off senior Gibran Hamdan's pass and had the ball on the IU 15 yard-line. Central Michigan looked as if they would extend their lead. But on their second play of that drive, senior Jeremy Belcher forced a fumble from CMU running back Robbie Mixon, and senior defensive lineman Kris Dielman recovered for IU.

Field hockey falls to BSU again

·

The Hoosiers fell to 2-5 over the weekend after losing to Ball State for the second time this season, 1-0. Similar to the first game between the two, IU was dominated on the offensive side. The Hoosiers were outshot 22-2 in the first contest on Sept. 6 and were outshot 27-3 on Saturday in Muncie, Ind. The Cardinals also gained more penalty corners, defeating IU in that category, 19-4.

Hoosiers finish in fifth

·

It's amazing what two weeks can do. Two weeks without competition. Two weeks to reflect on the last tournament. Two weeks to find any mistakes and correct them, and two weeks to get ready to win. That is exactly what the Hoosiers did on Saturday. Sunday, however, was a different story. The Hoosiers ended Saturday in second place, one shot back of leader Eastern Kentucky University, but fell in the standings Sunday to finish the tournament in fifth place.

Burns keys team success

·

One of the key ingredients for a successful cross country team is at least one runner the coach can count on for a solid performance every race. Head coach Robert Chapman said sophomore Thomas Burns fills that role for the Hoosiers.
