NFL legend Unitas dies at 69

·

Johnny Unitas, the Hall of Fame quarterback who broke nearly every NFL passing record and won three championships with the Baltimore Colts in an 18-year career, died Wednesday at age 69. Unitas died of a heart attack, Baltimore Ravens spokesman Chad Steele said. Steele had no other details. Unitas underwent emergency triple-bypass surgery in March 1993 after a heart attack.

Hoosiers battle Xavier tonight

·

After a 3-1 setback at Cincinnati last week, the Hoosiers battle Xavier tonight at Bill Armstrong Stadium. The Hoosiers enter the game 1-2. The Hoosiers have allowed seven goals in their first three contests this year, and they need to improve their defense against the Musketeers, with conference play only a week away. "We need to solidify organization at the back and establish a rhythm," coach Mick Lyon said.

New QB for next game

·

Fifth-year senior Gibran Hamdan was named the starter at quarterback by coach Gerry DiNardo Tuesday. Hamdan will make his first career start for the Hoosiers Saturday against Kentucky. Hamdan will replace senior Tommy Jones who sustained a concussion in last Saturday's 40-13 loss to Utah. "I am going to play Gibran (Hamdan), we are going to start Gibran," DiNardo said. "Tommy (Jones) can't practice today, and I don't know that Tommy would be ready for the game. So obviously that plays into it, but Gibran is going to start in the game."

Sports serve as outlet on anniversary

·

CHICAGO -- The colorful NL pennants that usually fly above the Wrigley Field scoreboard were gone, replaced by a lone American flag at half-staff. Songs such as "Let it Be" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water" played during batting practice instead of the usual bubblegum pop music. And the electronic message board carried a simple message: "We Shall Not Forget." "I first felt guilty about coming here to celebrate," fan Geraldine Mrozinski said before the Chicago Cubs' game against the Montreal Expos. "But once we got here, it seems like the perfect place to be. Here, we'll commemorate it in the proper way."

Forward returns; Hoosiers gain second win

·

The boys were back together again. For the first time in 2002, IU forwards Pat Noonan and Mike Ambersley started a regular season game on the frontline. Granted, it was not an astonishing debut for the two strikers who both attended the same high school, but the onfield chemistry that was created some five years ago at DeSmet Jesuit High School near St. Louis, Mo. was still visible.

Hoosier offense comes alive with two goals

·

It may not have been pretty, but the IU men's soccer team picked up its second victory Tuesday with a 2-0 win over Louisville. The No. 9 ranked Hoosiers dominated ball control and possession throughout the match, but managed just two goals on the Cardinals' stingy defense. IU (2-1-2) posted 13 shots to Louisville's four and the Hoosiers had eight corner kick opportunities to the Cardinals' one. Louisville (2-3) used physical play to frustrate the Hoosiers' offensive attack as they committed a total of 26 fouls to IU's 15.

'United We Stand'

·

For most Americans, the date Sept. 11 manifests a multitude of feelings. From thoughts of loss and fear to an inspired sense of patriotism and national unity, Americans faced the tragedy and dealt with it in their own way. One year later, coach Amy Robertson and the field hockey team still use the emotions and a motto provoked by Sept. 11 to inspire greater team unity.

Sept. 11 hits close to home for fullback, coach

·

For most Americans, Sept. 11 has become a landmark that is vividly cemented in their memories. Just as generations before remember where they were when John F. Kennedy was assassinated, or what they were doing when the Challenger exploded, people of all generations can clearly recollect what they were doing when the news that the World Trade Center was struck by two planes reached them.

Grad student muscles way to top

At first glance, Michelle Amsden looks and sounds nothing like a champion-caliber powelifter. But, Amsden, a softspoken, 5-foot, 1-inch graduate student, has become one of the premiere competitors in her sport.

Freshmen contribute early for Hoosiers

·

For first-year women's soccer coach Mick Lyon, it's been first-year players who've been making an impact. Freshmen defender Ryan Hanley and midfielder Kristen Zmijewski have both made big contributions on the field this season.

Colts lose two more

·

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Colts don't expect starting defensive tackle James Cannida or starting tight end Marcus Pollard to play this weekend against visiting Miami. Both were injured in Sunday's 28-25 victory at Jacksonville. Pollard has cartilage damage in his ribs after being tackled and fumbling midway through the third quarter. He did not return.

Colts final season in Indy?

·

INDIANAPOLIS -- Peyton Manning and Tony Dungy wanted to reflect on their opening-day victory and focus on their next game. Instead, football took a back seat Monday to rumors that the Colts could be playing their final season in Indianapolis -- even as they prepare for their home opener Sunday against Miami.

Team seeking scoring options

·

The IU men's soccer team needs a confidence booster. After being labeled the preseason No. 1 team in the nation, the Hoosiers have had trouble living up to their billing in the first four games of the regular season. IU has gone 1-1-2, scoring just three goals in those four contests, while conceding five. "I am surprised and disappointed at our goal production," coach Jerry Yeagley said. "But we are creating scoring chances. If we weren't creating chances, then we'd have a bigger problem."

Team finishes seventh

·

Improvement is always good. Finishing 15th at last year's Badger Invitational, the only direction the men's golf team could go was up. And that's exactly what they did. Shooting a collective 286 in the third round helped the Hoosiers secure seventh place out of 15 teams.

Pete Sampras was right all along: He did have a 14th Grand Slam title in him. And just like the first, all those years ago, it came in a U.S. Open final against his old rival Andre Agassi.

Hoosiers defeat Tribe, then shutout by St. Johns' Red Storm

·

Early season struggles have plagued the men's soccer team in recent years. After four games, the Hoosiers have sat at 2-2 each of the last three seasons. Some programs might take that record, but for a team often ranked in the preseason top 5 or 10 in the nation, a .500 start is usually disappointing.
