Notre Dame comes to IU on 7 game winning streak

·

Mike Brey has gone seven games and hasn't needed to call a 30-second timeout yet. No momentum swings for the opponents. No scoring runs that have put Notre Dame in danger of losing. No games closer than 13 points. Brey, the second-year Fighting Irish coach, is confident but fears that all might change tonight when Notre Dame meets IU at 7 p.m. tonight in Assembly Hall. It will be the home opener for IU (4-2) and the first true road test for the Irish (7-0). In its only other road game, Notre Dame wiped out DePaul 82-55. "I'm counting on our experience to help us in that atmosphere and set the tone," Brey said. "Our experience can keep us pretty steady."

Hoosiers back home and rolling

·

STATE COLLEGE, PA -- Mike Davis had one wish. Before IU set out on its three-game road swing that ended Wednesday in Penn State's Bryce Jordan Center, IU's coach wanted two road wins. He got his wish, and the Hoosiers return Saturday to Assembly Hall, where they will play five of their next six, including four of their next five Big Ten games. IU (12-6, 5-1 Big Ten) pounded Penn State (5-12, 1-5) 85-51, marking the first time since the 1992-1993 season the Hoosiers have recorded three Big Ten road victories before February. "Ideally, we wanted to come out of this road trip (winning) one of three, and we get two of three," Davis said. "Now we have three road wins in the Big Ten, which is good."

Louisville a quality early season opponent

·

IU men's tennis team (2-0) used a team effort to defeat Toledo and Bowling Green last Saturday to win its first two matches of the spring season. The Hoosiers look to use that same formula today as they travel to Louisville to play the Cardinals (2-0) at 3:30 p.m. IU holds an 11-2 all-time mark against Louisville. The Cardinals defeated Illinois State and Northern Iowa last Saturday.

Solid play in Florida follows slow start

·

Spring break began in nightmarish fashion for the men's golf team, and its problems had nothing to do with sketchy travel agents or missed flights. The team had one of its poorest showings of the year, limping to a 14th place finish in the 16-team Big Red Classic, an event of which the Hoosiers were co-host.

Big Ten schools debate athletics reform

·

In a move that could mark the beginning of the end for big-time college sports, the Committee on Institutional Cooperation -- the academic equivalent of the Big Ten -- will meet Friday and Saturday to determine whether its member schools should decide to overhaul collegiate athletics and put an end to the "exponential growth" of their athletic programs.

Little 500 teams take a working vacation

·

While many IU students were taking spring break as a week to sit back and relax, the students that are training to ride in the Little 500 were hard at work. Many stayed in Bloomington to participate in the IU Student Foundation's sponsored training camp, while others packed up their gear and headed south with the other hordes of college students.

The nationally ranked men's cross country team heads into its first meet tonight in one of the few home meets for the Hoosiers this season. The Indiana Open features Eastern Illinois, IU-Purdue University at Indianapolis, IU-Purdue University at Fort Wayne, Ball State and Miami of Ohio. While the opponents aren't ranked along with IU, the Hoosiers said they have several goals to accomplish at this meet.

Winning streak provides No. 1 position

·

The men's soccer team heads to Madison ,Wis., this weekend as the No. 1 seed in the 2001 Big Ten Tournament. Matches begin today and conclude with the championship game at 2 p.m. Sunday. IU hopes to get back on track after a disappointing showing in the tournament last year. A second-round 1-0 loss to Ohio State interrupted a 39 conference game unbeaten streak, and a run of eight conference tourney championships in the tournament's nine-year history. This season, IU (12-3-1) is 6-0 in league play, marking the sixth straight season the Hoosiers have gone undefeated against conference foes. Not only have the Hoosiers won, but they have swept through the conference, outscoring opponents 17-1 overall.

Qualifications plagued by harsh conditions

·

Conditions were ideal during last year's Little 500 qualifications. Temperatures were in the mid 70s, and the wind was almost non-existent. This year, conditions weren't as friendly to riders. The temperature never rose above 40 degrees. In the morning the track was wet, but the moisture was not enough to compensate for the dry conditions during the past week. The track was loose by the afternoon and wind was a factor during the whole day.

Swimmer constantly progressing

When Susan Woessner came to IU as a freshman in the fall of 1998, the IU swim team was in the process of a makeover. Woessner's freshman year was also the first year for coach Dorsey Tierney at the helm of the Hoosier program.

Fan support near bottom of Big Ten

·

An IU cheerleader posed the eternal question revolving around women's basketball as she looked at the stands a minute before the IU-Penn State game at Assembly Hall. "Where is everybody?" she said. The most loyal Hoosier fans filled the short, courtside bleachers, but the south bleachers remained almost completely vacant before tipoff.

Team aims to break out of offensive slump

·

Confidence breeds good shooting. That's what women's basketball coach Kathi Bennett has stressed this season, as her "fragile" Hoosiers have averaged a Big Ten-worst 58 points per game. But after her players attacked Tuesday's practice with positive attitudes, Bennett said she feels the Hoosiers (8-8, 2-3 Big Ten) can flaunt intensity and poise Thursday night against No. 11 Purdue (13-3, 4-2 Big Ten) at Assembly Hall.

Penn State knocks off IU 62-57

The women's basketball team fell for the 10th time in as many tries to Penn State at Bryce Jordan Center last night, 62-57. IU forward Erin McGinnis missed a three-pointer with four seconds left as the Hoosiers trailed 60-57. Nittany Lion Kelly Mazzante picked up the rebound and completed two free throws with two seconds left to seal the victory. "I thought we played well enough to win this game," IU coach Kathi Bennett said in a press release. "We prepared hard all week long. I think we played hard today and we were in the ball game."

Haston selected 16th by Charlotte

·

Nearly a hundred aspiring NBA athletes discovered Wednesday night the direction their lives would take, as all 29 NBA teams made their selections in the 2001 draft in New York City. The lottery picks walked on the stage sporting their new teams' hats and shook the hand of NBA commissioner David Stern, welcoming them into the league. First-team All-Big Ten Kirk Haston was not one of them. Even though Haston didn't get to met Stern, the former IU men's basketball star was selected with the 16th overall pick by the Charlotte Hornets, officially entering into the newest stage of his career: a professional one.
