Mini 500 opens

·

Let the races begin. Mini 500 has officially kicked off the the "Greatest College Weekend" -- the Little 500. After 60 teams started the race, only three were left at the end of the night and were able to call themselves Mini 500 Champions. It boiled down to three teams in each division. Charlie's Angels, members of Evans Scholars, repeated as champions in the women's race. El Caminos won a close race and were the champions of the co-ed race. Delta Sigma Pi won the men's race.

Gone.

·

Cecilia Jeffries isn't afraid to admit it. Being the IU basketball fan she is, Jared Jeffries' mom had some part of her that wanted her son to stay Hoosier and lead IU on another NCAA tournament run. But now she knows that won't happen.

Rows 9, 10 full of surprises

·

The excitement of the Little 500 race has arrived. The crowd will see the sweat glisten on the foreheads of riders who have trained for hours on end, every day, pushing themselves harder and harder. They'll sense the tension and nervousness among the riders, asking themselves if they have what it takes, after all those practices, to ride their best. They may even see some riders collide and be sent toppling over on the track, with others whizzing by, with a slight attitude change for either the better or the worse. Most of the teams in Rows 9 and 10 had different expectations for a qualifying time. But they still have time to surprise themselves, and the crowd on race day.

Hoosiers' NCAA hopes dashed

·

DURHAM, N.C. -- The women's basketball team's gig as post-season Cinderella ended Friday night. A feisty horned frog wouldn't transform into a prince, preventing any more fairy tales for IU. The ninth-seeded Hoosiers (17-14) forced tight defense on the No. 8 seed Texas Christian Horned Frogs (24-6) in IU's first NCAA tournament game since 1995.

Hoosiers earn redemption

After an early exit in last year's Big Ten Tournament, the men's soccer team found redemption Sunday night, winning their ninth Big Ten Championship, in the league's 11-year existence. The Hoosiers (14-3-1) topped the No. 5 seed Michigan and No. 3 seed Michigan State to win the title. IU 1, Michigan 0 Thursday night, the No.4 seeded Wisconsin Badgers were upset by the No.5 Michigan Wolverines on their home field.

Fans keep the faith until the end

·

They believed until the end. Thousands of fans swarmed theaters, houses, bars and restaurants -- any room that had a television -- almost uniformly clad in red, white and "Indiana" emblems hoping for a Cinderella season with a fairy tale ending. A day and early evening full of girls dangling from car windows, high-spirited honking, long lines and hard partying gave way to a night when nobody remained outdoors. The parking lots stood open, class buildings stood empty and the only sounds were reflected cheers.

Offense can't take bite from Lions

·

Penn State guard Kelly Mazzante caught the ball on the perimeter and fired a three-pointer 23 seconds into the Nittany Lions' matchup with IU last night. That initial shot fell good, registering Mazzante's first three points of a 16-point half. The game went downhill from there -- for the Hoosiers. Too much Mazzante, too little effective defensive and too many missed late foul shots spelled a 67-59 loss for IU at Assembly Hall.

Draft decision not an easy one

·

Four years ago, Kirk Haston made one of the most difficult decisions of his life, jumping from small-town Tennessee to Big Ten country and Bloomington. After IU's first-round NCAA tournament loss to Kent State in March, Haston came face to face with another taxing decision -- stick around Bloomington to finish his collegiate eligibility or scamper to the NBA.

Senior guard takes charge in historic night

·

Senior point guard Heather Cassady peered over her shoulder at her teammates during a timeout in Saturday's game. She shook her hands and shouted to the Hoosiers, "Settle down, white." Northern Arizona had chopped IU's lead to 28-23, and Cassady didn't want to see her team's morale drop. Her teammates weren't hitting their shots, so the senior captain took matters into her own hands.

Team picks up dramatic victory

The men's tennis team couldn't stop Illinois' 48-match winning streak Saturday, but made amends Sunday by topping No. 44 Northwestern 4-3. Hoosier sophomore Zach Held nailed down the win with a three-set win at No. 5 singles, giving the Hoosiers their second Big Ten victory of the season. No. 39 IU (10-5, 2-3 Big Ten) lost the doubles point, but got victories at No. 1 and 2 singles to grab two early points.

Salukis fans help take down Hoosiers

·

It was over before it started. That's what Mike Davis said after the Hoosiers were trampled by Southern Illinois, 72-60, in front of a sellout crowd of 10,000 at a frenzied and chaotic SIU Arena. The win against IU (No. 24 ESPN/USA Today poll) was the first against a ranked team for the Salukis in more than 13 years. Davis said he knew it was coming. "I know my team. Just the look in their eyes," Davis said. "Even though we were up 4-0, you could just tell the momentum was (Salukis') way from the introductions." The crowd was noisy throughout, rattling the Hoosiers (4-2) and taking them out of their offense. The game was a pattern of runs by each team, only the Salukis had more.

Purdue's Keady still scowling over slow start

·

Gene Keady wasn't happy, and he wasn't shy about telling everyone about it. His scowl was worse. His Purdue squad wasn't playing up to his standards and was off to an 0-2 start in Big Ten play. But Wednesday's 84-75 upset of No. 9 Illinois in West Lafayette kept the Boilermakers from their first 0-3 league start in 38 years and might have cheered up Keady.

DiNardo faces challenges with new recruit class

·

Football coach Gerry DiNardo recruited some big names at LSU. Quarterback Rohan Davey, wide receiver Josh Reed and linebacker Trev Faulk were talented football players who helped LSU claim Sugar Bowl and SEC championship game victories this past season. Every member of the trio should be dressing Sundays next fall, and they all signed their letters-of-intent during DiNardo's tenure.
