Indians win seventh straight

CLEVELAND -- Jim Thome busted out of another April slump with a grand slam and five RBIs Wednesday night as the Cleveland Indians won their seventh straight, 9-3 over the Minnesota Twins. Thome's bat had been about the only thing missing so far this season for the Indians, 8-1 after winning the first three games of their four-game set with Minnesota.

Pacers edge out Toronto 98-82

INDIANAPOLIS - Indiana's slim playoff hopes are still alive. Jermaine O'Neal scored 29 points and grabbed 15 rebounds and Brad Miller added 23 points and 11 rebounds as the Pacers beat Toronto 98-82 Wednesday night, snapping the Raptors nine-game winning streak.

Runner excels despite setbacks

The IU men's track and field team has one of the deepest distance teams in the Big Ten. A large part of the success in the distance events is in the 3000-meter steeplechase.

Recruitment not always easy for teams

Five members on the water polo team are from California. None are from Indiana, a state where high schools do not have water polo as a varsity or club sport. This can make for some challenges when fielding a team here at IU.

Eventually, perseverance will pay off. Just because he does not always receive playing time, freshman Reid Strand does not feel sorry for himself. Instead, he keeps his head high and helps the IU men's tennis team (6-12, 0-6) in any way he can.

When you look at the burly 6-foot-1, 200 pound third baseman, you just know that he's launched some fence-clearing bombs in his career. And that's exactly what junior Vasili Spanos has done in three seasons on the IU baseball team. Spanos may not be the biggest guy on the field, but he plays like a giant and has made his presence felt since his freshmen year.

Coach grabs 400th career victory

IU softball coach Diane Stephenson recorded her 400th career-coaching victory when the Hoosiers (11-21-1) downed Evansville 6-3 in the nightcap of their doubleheader yesterday.

IU splits series, snaps streak

The IU softball team snapped its nine-game losing streak Tuesday with a 6-5 victory over Wright State (6-16) in the first game of a doubleheader at the IU Softball Field. But the Raiders returned the favor with 1-0 shutout of the Hoosiers (10-20-1) in the second contest.

Hamdan's hot bat helps Hoosiers win

It may not have been pretty at times, but a win is a win. IU survived multiple rallies by Miami University (Ohio) and used its own late inning heroics to come away with a hard-fought 10-7 victory Tuesday.

After being swept by Michigan and Michigan State in Big Ten Conference play last weekend, the IU softball team returns to action today against Wright State at the IU Softball Field. The Raiders and Hoosiers are scheduled to play a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.

Sophomore Jared Jeffries to enter NBA draft

The decision was announced at a press conference today at 2 p.m. The second-team All-American made the announcement with his family present. Jeffries was the Big Ten player of the year, and finished one point short of 1,000.

Comeback falls short vs. rivals

The water polo team went into this weekend with a few goals in mind: play tough defense, convert power plays and beat Michigan. The Hoosiers came close to accomplishing all of those things.

Juniors lead 9th-place finish

The IU men's golf team posted a final round score of 295 in the Marshall Invitational on Saturday. The Hoosiers tied with Wisconsin for ninth place in the 20-team field.

Former Hoosier moves up in ranks

Morgantown, W.Va. -- Spurned by Bob Huggins and others, West Virginia hired Bowling Green's Dan Dakich as its head coach Thursday. Dakich played at IU and was an assistant to Bob Knight for 11 years there. At West Virginia, he'll try to rebuild a team that set records for losses in two of the past four seasons and was racked with discipline problems. The Mountaineers were 8-20 this season, 1-15 in the Big East.

Windy weather plagues trials

Braving strong winds and cold weather is a hard task for any Little 500 rider. Braving it alone can be even harder. The first series event of Little 500 was held Wednesday. Individual Time Trials (ITT) began at 4 p.m. and carried into the evening when the last riders took the track a little after 10 p.m.

Injuries derail Hoosiers after good start to season

The IU men's tennis team appeared to be on the right track at the beginning of the spring season. After winning five of their first seven matches, the Hoosiers were confident, with hopes to contend for the Big Ten regular season championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.

This weekend is an important one for the women's water polo team. It plays host to the Collegiate Water Polo Association Conference Weekend. The Hoosiers hope to produce some victories that will help their seeding in the Conference Championships.

Fresh off a victory over rival Purdue last Saturday, the IU women's tennis team will travel to two different Big Ten foes this weekend, looking to move up in the conference standings. The Hoosiers travel to Wisconsin Saturday for a 10 a.m. start and to Minnesota Sunday for another 10 a.m. start.
