Strong quarterbacks lead Hoosiers, Illini

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Illinois was in many ways similar to Indiana heading into Saturday's game. Like the Hoosiers, the Fighting Illini entered the game after a disappointing loss last weekend. Like IU, Illinois needed a late season surge to qualify for postseason play. Like their opponent, the Fighting Illini had a junior quarterback, who knows how to make big plays.

Hockey team still unbeaten

The hockey team continued its undefeated conference record and home record this weekend with its respective 6-0 and 7-0 wins against Ohio State University Friday and Saturday.

Volleyball team defeats Iowa

The volleyball team rebounded from a loss against No. 7 Minnesota to defeat Iowa in three matches Saturday. The Hoosiers fell to the Golden Gophers (22-2, 11-2 in conference play) in three matches, 15-2, 18-16, 15-11. IU improved to 14-10, 5-9 in Big Ten play with a 15-7, 15-11, 15-13 win over the Buckeyes.

Team loses in overtime

The men's soccer team snapped a 10-game winning streak Saturday in a 1-0 overtime loss to Stanford. The Hoosiers then turned the loss into a two-game losing streak, losing 2-1 to Cal-Berkeley Sunday.

Hoosiers search for go-to man

With former guard A.J. Guyton graduated and drafted to the Chicago Bulls, the Hoosiers are searching for a go-to man. There were signs of promise from junior forward Jarrad Odle and freshman forward Jared Jeffries Sunday in IU's 84-74 win against Athletes in Action (5-2).

Freshman Jared Jeffries shines in preseason game

Interim head coach Mike Davis has said many times that Jared Jeffries is a good basketball player who will contribute a great many things to this year's team. Jeffries lived up to the billing Sunday as he led IU to an 84-74 victory against Athletes in Action.

Another heartbreaker

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Paul Mandina stared with a stoic look on his face at the brown lectern before him. Mandina scratched his head as he tried to explain the frustration after the Hoosiers had just lost another close football game. Illinois squeaked past IU, 42-35, before 54,283 fans, ending the Hoosiers' bowl chances. The Hoosiers' senior defensive tackle and co-captain could not find the words.

Coach holds Hannig for tournament play

Junior goalkeeper Colin Rogers spent most of his three years at IU benched behind National Player of the Year candidate senior T.J. Hannig. This weekend in Berkeley, Calif., Hannig will serve as Rogers' backup, as the Hoosiers face Stanford and Cal.

Kurt Kittner didn't shy away from criticizing his performance last weekend in Illinois' 14-10 loss at Michigan State. The Illini junior quarterback said even his mom could have made some of the throws he couldn't.

Soccer to end season on road

This weekend is supposed to be an uneventful one for the men's soccer team. Coach Jerry Yeagley traditionally gives the team a week off before the Big Ten Tournament so it can rest -- both physically and mentally. But this year will be different.

Hoosiers to face Athletes in Action

After weeks of slamming against themselves in practice, men's basketball will finally face another team. The Hoosiers' preparation for the regular season begins against Athletes in Action at 2 p.m. Sunday in Assembly Hall. IU will play a second exhibition game Nov. 10 against Marathon Oil before facing Pepperdine University in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament Nov. 14.
