Hoosiers end Big Ten season with loss

·

The women's soccer team ended its Big Ten season Friday, losing a 1-0 game to Purdue. With 3:35 remaining in the first half, Purdue freshman back Jenny Kinkead put the game-winner past keeper Chrissy Heubi. That would be all that the Boilers would need as IU extended its scoreless streak to 463 minutes. It was the eighth time the Hoosiers have been shut out in the conference season.

Competition heats up in conference play

·

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- No member of the men\'s soccer team knows what losing a Big Ten game feels like. In fact, the Hoosiers haven\'t lost a Big Ten game in 38 matches. The unbeaten streak extends back to Oct. 13, 1995, when IU lost to eventual national-champion Wisconsin 2-0.

Hoosiers play poorly, still win

·

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The men's soccer team needed a penalty kick in the game's 20th minute Sunday to beat Ohio State in its final regular season Big Ten game. The penalty kick, scored by senior forward Matt Fundenberger after junior midfielder Tyler Hawley was taken down in the penalty area, was all the scoring that took place at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium, as IU won 1-0.

It's about time

·

The football team's best week of practice this season resulted in IU picking up its biggest win in the coach Cam Cameron era. After getting embarrassed 58-0 last Saturday at Michigan, IU (3-4, 2-2 in Big Ten play) recovered Saturday to defeat No. 22 Minnesota 51-43 before a Homecoming crowd of 30,882 at Memorial Stadium. The win marked Cameron's first victory against a ranked opponent. IU's last win against a ranked team was a 10-0 victory against Michigan State in 1993.

Conference season finishes at Purdue

·

Women's soccer coach Joe Kelley is starting to do the things he said he hoped to do with his lineup. The wealth of talent he possessed at the beginning of the season disappeared during the bulk of conference play as injuries kept Kelley's plans purely on paper.

Hoosiers seek upset at Ohio State

·

Freshman outside hitter Monique Pritz must not be a big fan of ESPN2. Upon learning that the volleyball team's match Saturday at Ohio State would be nationally-televised, she deadpanned "Oh really?" A shrug of her shoulders accompanied her unsuspected interrogation.

Freshman fights injury to play big role for the Hoosiers

·

In baseball, there is always a player that is considered the "utility" player. He's a player that could play any position on the field the coach feels necessary. For the women's soccer team, the utility player is freshman Kim Sturm. Last year Sturm had to fight through an Anterior Cruciate Ligament injury that had benched her during her senior year of high school and her freshman year at IU. Despite the injury, she has returned this season to play an extensive amount of roles on the field.

Coach expects more from offense

·

Coach Jerry Yeagley's soccer team is riding a nine-game winning streak. It recently clinched the regular-season Big Ten title and claimed a No. 1 spot in a national poll -- but he still expects more from his Hoosiers.

No sophomore jinx this year

·

When it comes to team chemistry, the talk often centers around two topics: senior leadership and new talent. And then there's the middle child, constantly seeking attention. Everyone's heard of the sophomore jinx -- the phrase used for second-year players who flounder after a stellar freshman season. Fortunately for this year's men's soccer team, the sophomore jinx is nothing but a myth.

The men's soccer team's Big Ten season isn't done yet. The Hoosiers might have already clinched a No. 1 seed in the Big Ten tournament, but they have one regular season conference game remaining.

Tyson, Golota ready to rumble

·

Mike Tyson's boorish behavior at a recent press conference was quite strange. The former heavyweight champion cut loose with a vulgarity-strewn rant that left officials and the media perplexed as to the result of this Friday's match with Andrew Golota (36-4, 29 KO\'s).

Intense practice results in sacrifice

·

It's 8 a.m. What have you done today? The crew team has been training in the water of Lake Lemon for two hours. To some it might seem crazy, but to the team it is routine. Whichever the case, it's the reason for the success of the women rowers.

Subway Series a disappointment

·

I guess it was inevitable. As eight teams entered the playoffs, everybody knew the two that would eventually be in the World Series. Sure, the San Francisco Giants had the best record in baseball. Sure, the Braves' pitching staff makes them the annual National League favorite. The White Sox were supposed to sneak in, and the Yankees lost seven in a row the week before the playoffs. But did anybody really think that it would end up differently?

Last Chance for Hoosiers

Ran into a football player the other day. Not a kicker or a running back, but one of those really meaty guys who could be mistaken for an ox. When our eyes met, there was no doubt we knew each other.

Golden opportunity

·

To this point, Minnesota coach Glen Mason has succeeded where IU coach Cam Cameron has failed. Both hired in 1997, Mason has revitalized the once-dormant Gopher program to respectability and has taken his team to a bowl game. Cameron has yet to do either of the two.

Hoosiers outmuscle Wildcats

·

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Three IU soccer players sat on the bench after the Hoosiers' 2-0 win against Kentucky Wednesday night. Vapor rose from their moist jerseys as they took their time drinking from Gatorade cups and resting after a highly physical match that had eight yellow cards and a red card.
