The IU softball team swept the field Feb. 15-17 at the Georgia Tech Classic in Atlanta, marking the team’s second weekend of play of the 2013 season.
After starting the season with a 3-6 record, the No. 12 IU water polo team put together its first weekend of play with more wins than losses. The Hoosiers were 3-1 in the Bison Invitational and improved their record to 6-7.
IU improved its overall team record to an even 9-9 on the season after six straight losses, with 33-12 wins against Lindenwood-Belleville and SIUE and a shutout dual against Knox College, with a final score of 45-0.
On Friday, IU lost to No. 25 Tennessee, and the Hoosiers fell to Kentucky on Sunday. The Hoosiers were tied 3-3 heading into the final singles match against both the Volunteers and Wildcats, but were unable to pull off a victory on either occasion.
Going into Saturday’s home rematch against Hammons and Purdue, IU Coach Tom Crean said Hammons’ career performance was still fresh in their minds.
When people look back on this year’s season series, it will be remembered as a year where IU and Purdue switched ends of the spectrum.

The Hoosiers will play their first weekday match of the spring season when they travel to Knoxville, Tenn. to face No. 25 Tennessee at 4 p.m. Friday. At 11 a.m. Sunday, IU will take on Kentucky in Lexington, Ky.
In addition to squaring off against SIUE, the Hoosiers have also added duals against Knox College and Lindenwood-Belleville University.
Of the nine games the No. 12 IU water polo team has played so far, seven have been against teams ranked higher than the Hoosiers. This Saturday and Sunday, IU (3-6) will catch a break from the rough schedule as it will face only one ranked opponent.
The Hoosiers will face Miami (Ohio), Marshall and Georgia Tech over the three-day span of the tournament.
IU's pitching staff will be over 10 deep in the 2013 season, and its performance early in the season will be critical to the Hoosiers' postseason chances.
If the Hoosiers allow Hammons another 30-point performance Saturday night, Crean may not be very pleased, but IU will have to make sure the freshman’s performance and confidence doesn’t spread to the rest of his teammates.
With Saturday’s rematch against Purdue at home, the momentum would seem to favor the Hoosiers even more, particularly considering each team’s last time out.
After 1,517 days, IU Coach Tom Crean can even his record as the Hoosiers coach with a win against Purdue on Saturday.
IU baseball will open its 2013 season this weekend at the Big Ten / Big East Challenge in games against No. 19 Louisville, Connecticut and South Florida.
