Column: Reasons for hope on the court, in the pool

With a struggling volleyball team, a one-win Big Ten football team led by a new head coach and a men’s soccer team looking toward its 25th NCAA Tournament appearance, it has been a roller coaster fall for IU Athletics. As the leaves fall off the trees, many of IU’s fall sports are concluding their seasons, and that brings a new set of schedules for winter sports.

Hoosiers selected to men's soccer NCAA Tournament

Indiana grabbed the No. 16 seed for the tournament, awarding them a first-round bye into the tournament of 48. Unseeded Liberty and Old Dominion will face off Thursday to determine the Hoosiers’ second-round foe.

Forty-eight long years have elapsed since the team won a Big Ten Championship, but players and coaches are brimming with confidence and optimism ahead of the upcoming season, fully convinced they are capable of bringing the conference title to Bloomington.

Ginther qualifies for Championships

Junior Samantha Ginther was selected as an individual qualifier for Monday’s national meet after finishing 14th in Saturday’s 6K NCAA Regional with a time of 20:58.3.

IU knocked from Big Ten tourney

Junior goalkeeper Luis Soffner succeeded for a ninth time this season in shutting out IU’s opponent. The problem was, he didn’t shut out his own teammate, senior Tommy Meyer.

Cross country makes NCAA championships

The men clinched their tournament berth during the weekend with an automatic qualification by finishing second in the 10K NCAA Great Lakes Regional with 70 points. The men finished 20 points behind Wisconsin.

17-game streak ends on IU’s Senior Night

After junior middle blocker Samantha Thrower managed three straight kills to cap off a five-set Senior Night victory against the Iowa Hawkeyes, the collective feeling of relief could be felt throughout University Gym.

IU defeats Chattanooga 78-53

The Hoosiers improved to 2-0 for the regular season with a 78-53 win at Assembly Hall. Sophomore guard Victor Oladipo led IU with 21 points.

IU wins season opener

Behind an offensive outburst of 65 percent shooting and four players in double figures, the IU men’s basketball team won its 14th straight season opener Friday night at Assembly Hall with a 96-66 win against Stony Brook.

The sophomore duo combined for 29 points on 12-of-15 shooting to lead the IU men’s basketball team to a 96-66 victory against Stony Brook to open the season on Friday night at Assembly Hall.
