When the sun rises

The IU Rowing Club, in its sixth season, currently has only six rowers and a coxswain. The club’s first regatta is Lemonhead on Oct. 1 at Lake Lemon.

Out of 141 riders who took a survey conducted by the IDS in the weeks leading up to the 2011 race, only five said they didn’t participate in a sport for at least one full season in high school. Among the field of riders in the last race, 307 seasons of athletic experience pedaled across a cinder track.

The No. 17 IU men’s soccer team (0-0-1) played to a 0-0 tie against in-state rival No. 12 Notre Dame (0-0-1). The game was the first away-from-home season opener for the Hoosiers since 2006.

New baseball and softball facilities approved, will open in 2013

On Aug. 19, the IU Board of Trustees approved construction of a new baseball and softball complex to be built north of the Indiana Tennis Center and Mellencamp Pavilion. Ground is scheduled to be broken in spring 2012. The stadiums should be ready for the 2013 season.

IU men’s soccer’s hopes of defending their Big Ten championship took a sizable hit Dec. 29, 2010, when their leading scorer, junior Will Bruin, decided to forego his senior season and pursue a career in Major League Soccer.

Men’s soccer travels to South Bend for opener

The No. 17 IU men’s soccer team will open their season at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in South Bend with renewed expectations. They’ll take on No. 12 Notre Dame in the team’s first season opener on the road since 2006.


IU Field Hockey

Healthy Hoosiers to play first game at home field

The Hoosiers open against Miami (OH) at 4 p.m. Friday at the IU Field Hockey Complex and finish their opening weekend against No. 15 Duke at 1 p.m. Sunday. It’s the first match between Duke and IU.

While it is true that few teams without a quarterback as their leader make it very far, these young Hoosiers have no other option. They have to turn to the most talented and productive player on the team — and that, without a doubt, is Belcher.
