Chicago bar hosts Hoosier football

Joe’s Bar may be located in Chicago, but its spacious back room Thursday night was all Bloomington for the Windy City’s IU Football Kickoff.

Jimmie Johnson, driver of the No. 48 Lowes Chevrolet, won the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard. Johnson also won the pole position Saturday after turning a lap of 181.763 m.p.h covering the 2.5 mile speedway in 49.515 seconds.

Rickerby named IU’s assistant director for compliance

Ian Rickerby has been named IU’s new assistant athletics director for compliance. The announcement comes two days after the IU Athletic Department announced former Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance Chad Hawley would retain his position with the Big Ten Conference.

Greg Middleton named to 5th preseason watch list

Despite not stepping onto the field, Greg Middleton has already had quite a summer. The junior defensive end was nominated as one of 36 pass rushers named to the preseason Ted Hendricks Defensive End of the Year Award. Middleton earned honors by being named one of eight finalists for the Hendricks award in 2007.

The College Football Hall of Fame enshrined IU’s all-time leading rusher Anthony Thompson  on Saturday night at a ceremony in South Bend. Thompson was among 16 players and four coaches receiving the honor.

Hawley says no to IU

Recently hired Associate Athletic Director for Compliance Services Chad Hawley has decided to not take the job at IU within the last 10 days, according to IU Athletics spokesman J.D. Campbell.Hawley will return to his previous position as the Big Ten’s assistant commissioner for compliance

BHS graduate named Notre Dame Athletic Director

Bloomington High School graduate Jack Swarbrick was named Notre Dame’s athletic director July 16. Swarbrick will take over the athletic department for the school he graduated from in 1976.

Hoosier alumnus ties for 70th in British Open

Hoosier alumnus Jeff Overton completed play in the 137th Open Championship on Sunday in Southport, England. Overton finished with a nine-over par final round and ended the tournament in a tie for 70th place at 21-over par.

The annual tournament raises money for the John M. Jackson Memorial Scholarship. The event honors Jackson, an IU student and former editor in chief of the Indiana Daily Student, who died in 1996. Hildebrandt, a design editor at the Indianapolis Star newspaper, was one of more than 60 participants at the event.

Twelve years after passing away from a brain aneurism during March of his senior year at IU, John Jackson, who served as the Indiana Daily Student’s editor-in-chief for the summer of 1995, is still being publicly remembered by his friends and family.

Rowing program adds 3 new assistant coaches for 2008-09

When the IU rowing team ended their season on May 18 after a 14th place finish out of 22 teams at the Aramark Central/South Region Sprints IU coach Steve Peterson said the team did a good job but thought they could have done better.
