Men and women set 10 new pool records in Louisville

After a loss to Michigan earlier in the year, the women came back and won 157-127 against the Wolverines on Jan. 8. On Friday, the men were on a mission to bring Louisville down after a loss to the team last season.

IU divers to compete in USA Winter Diving Nationals, swimmers head to Louisville

The IU diving team will travel to Iowa to compete in the USA Winter Diving Nationals from Sunday through the rest of the week and both the IU men and women travel to Louisville to face Louisville and Virginia Tech on Saturday.

Junior Eric Ress had another good showing, finishing fifth in the 100-yard backstroke and posting the third-best time in school history in the 200-yard backstroke, finishing fifth. Numerous women had top-five finishes, from junior Nikki White in the 500-yard freestyle to junior Alyssa Vavra in the 400-yard individual medley.

The annual Hoosierland Open, which usually takes place during the weekend before Thanksgiving, will lose a bit of its luster this year, as about 80 percent of the swim team will be participating in USA Short Course Nationals in Columbus, Ohio.

For the first time since October, the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will be competing against the same opponents in the same weekend. For the first time this season, the swimmers will be swimming somewhere other than Bloomington.

As the Texas men easily defeated both IU and Michigan in Friday’s dual meet, the Hoosiers ended up tying the Wolverines after Michigan squeezed out a victory in the last 25 yards of the final relay.

It has been a season of ups and downs for the men’s swimming and diving team. After a regular season in which they went 1-6 in dual meets, the Hoosiers finished fifth at the Big Ten Championships in February.

Fesenko 1st IU woman to win national swim title

With 10 swimmers and two divers, the Hoosiers ended up with 133 points and finished as the top Big Ten team. Many swimmers contributed to that point total, but senior Kate Fesenko was the star for IU.

Hoosiers off to Big Ten Championships

The No. 25 IU men’s swimming and diving team, winless in dual meets since defeating Northwestern on Oct. 23, will attempt to avenge losses when the Men’s Big Ten Championships begin today in Columbus, Ohio.
