Campaign promises getting out of hand

As the election season heats up, candidates seem to make a new campaign promise every day. Most promises include spending millions or even billions of dollars of the projected $4.6 trillion budget surplus to benefit a certain group of voters. Gore's overall plan, "Prosperity for America's Families," includes tax cuts and the creation of a $300 billion "reserve fund," among other expenditures, according to USA Today. Bush's plan, "Blueprint for the Middle Class," also includes tax cuts, and promises billions of dollars for reading programs, teacher training and recruitment, community health centers and programs for people with disabilities. And each major party candidate is accusing the other of overspending the surplus by about $1 trillion, according to USA Today.

Cross country team runs into a weekend of firsts

·

A weekend of firsts awaits the women's cross country team as it travels to St. Paul, Minn., to compete in the Roy Griak Invitational Saturday. Along with being the first time in IU history the team has participated in the meet, it will also be the first time this season the women will participate in a 6K race. This distance holds new significance this year, since the 2000 Women's NCAA Championship race will be a 6K, rather than a 5K as in previous years.

Depth key to Hoosiers' success

·

Oceans possess it. Stupid people do not. And coaches in every sport desire it. It is depth, and fortunately the 2000 men's soccer team is one of the program's deepest squads in history. Good thing, too, because it appears they will need every player to contribute in order to obtain success at season's end.

Kentucky's Brandon Sanders boots a kickoff high into the lights at Commonwealth Stadium. The ball sails to the 13-yard line where IU junior Derin Graham catches it and instinctively runs full speed down the middle of the field. He reaches the 20-yard line where he's greeted by a horde of Kentucky tacklers. Without fear, Graham jumps into the pile. He spins twice, and then, amazingly, Graham balances himself with one hand, breaking free from the pile.

Three weeks, three dangerous offenses and three talented quarterbacks. This isn't the ideal situation for the football team to break in new defensive coordinator James Bell's system. Faculty committee urges Brand, trustees to examine low rankings

·

Four faculty members sent a letter to President Myles Brand and the board of trustees Friday urging them to take action to improve IU's "excellence and reputation" in light of low rankings by U.S. News and World Report and the Florida Center. In the letter, the faculty members suggest establishing an outside committee to look into ways IU can improve. "We need some independent evaluation of the directions we are taking," said Peter Bondanella, one of the drafters of the letter and a professor of West European Studies. "A blue-ribbon committee composed of outside citizens, scholars and government officials might well be able to ascertain where we need to change direction."
