Riding out the storm: Part 2

At about 6 a.m. Monday, I woke up after my first night in the Superdome. Within a few minutes, the electricity in the stadium went out as we had been told it would when Hurricane Katrina first struck. The generators were quickly switched on, and significantly fewer spotlights were lit.

WASHINGTON -- President Bush intends to seek as much as $40 billion to cover the next phase of relief and recovery operations from Hurricane Katrina, congressional officials said Tuesday as leading lawmakers and the White House pledged to investigate an initial federal response widely condemned as woefully inadequate.

Three centuries of New Orleans history once included Mardi Gras merrymaking, the birth of jazz music and expressions of voodoo before Hurricane Katrina landed ashore a week ago. BATON ROUGE, La. -- Like estranged in-laws at a holiday gathering, President Bush and Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco kept their distance as both toured a relief center for storm victims Monday. At their next stop, the Republican president kissed the Democratic governor on the cheek, but it wasn't clear whether they had made up. State and federal officials are all facing public criticism for a slow response to the Katrina crisis. Behind the scenes, each suggests the other is to blame.

Indonesian plane crashes, 147 dead

MEDAN, Indonesia -- An Indonesian jetliner slammed into a crowded neighborhood moments after a shaky takeoff Monday and burst into flames, killing 147 people, including dozens on the ground. At least 15 passengers survived, among them an 18-month-old boy, officials said.

Bush picks Roberts to be chief justice

WASHINGTON -- President Bush nominated Judge John G. Roberts, Jr., to succeed William H. Rehnquist as chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court early Monday. Bush called on the Senate to confirm Roberts -- a 50-year-old appellate court judge originally nominated by Bush in July to succeed retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor -- before the Court opens its fall term Oct. 3.

Administration steps up Katrina relief

The Bush administration kept its Hurricane Katrina response and its public relations campaign in overdrive Sunday, even as first confirmation came from Washington of a dreaded statistic -- that the storm probably killed thousands of people. Responding to accusations of racial insensitivity, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said, "Nobody, especially the president, would have left people unattended on the basis of race."

Gaza pullout hits home for campus

In Israel, leading up to the pullout of the Gaza Strip, they wore their feelings on the clothes. "Everywhere there were ribbons showing how people felt," said IU freshman Inna Kolesnikovna, who visited Israel this summer. The country became inundated with a mass of conflicting orange and blue ribbons. Those who wore blue supported the pullout. The orange ribbons were for those who favored the settlers. It was a time when Israel was in somewhat of a divide.

Saddam, associates' trials set to open Oct. 19

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- The trial of Iraq's former strongman Saddam Hussein and seven associates will start Oct. 19, the government announced Sunday. In northern Iraq, clashes were continuing in an ethnically mixed insurgent stronghold, medical workers said. The announcement by government spokesman Laith Kubba confirmed unofficial reports that the former strongman and several of his closest aides will face a special tribunal immediately after the national referendum on Iraq's constitution Oct. 15.
