China authorizes attack on Taiwan

BEIJING -- China unveiled a law Tuesday authorizing an attack if Taiwan moves toward formal independence, increasing pressure on the self-ruled island while warning other countries not to interfere. Taiwan denounced the legislation as a "blank check to invade" and announced war games aimed at repelling an attack.

Clinton scheduled to have follow-up heart surgery

NEW YORK -- Former President Clinton will undergo a medical procedure this week to remove an unusual buildup of fluid and scar tissue from his chest, six months after he underwent quadruple bypass surgery, his office said Tuesday. "I feel fine," Clinton said in Washington.

Bloomington native recalls days in Iraq

With the ongoing conflict in Iraq receiving so much news coverage, it is easy to forget that in addition to men and women in uniform, hundreds of American citizens face the dangers of an unstable Iraq to provide us with that news. One Bloomington native spent 10 days in Baghdad to send Americans information about the Iraq elections.

MADRID, Spain -- Nations must band together to fight an international terrorism threat because most are too weak to deal with it on their own, a world summit on the new century's scourge was told Tuesday. Leading experts on terrorism also stressed the new enemy only can be contained and might claim lives for decades to come.

University of Colorado president resigns after scandal

DENVER -- University of Colorado President Elizabeth Hoffman announced Monday that she is resigning amid a football recruiting scandal and a national controversy about an activist professor who compared victims of the Sept. 11 attacks to a notorious Nazi. Hoffman, who has been president for five years, told the Board of Regents in a letter that her resignation is effective June 30 or whenever the board names a successor.

133 killed in Dominican prison riot

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic -- Rival gangs fighting for control of a provincial Dominican Republic prison set pillows and sheets ablaze Monday, starting a fire that killed at least 133 people after rescuers were thwarted by a jammed entrance, officials said. Only 26 inmates were rescued from the public jail in Higuey, 75 miles northeast of the capital on the island's eastern tip, said National Police Chief Manuel de Jesus Perez Sanchez.

President names Bolton new ambassador to U.N.

WASHINGTON -- Undersecretary of State John R. Bolton, an outspoken arms control expert who rarely muffles his views in diplomatic nuance, is President Bush's choice to be U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice made the announcement Monday with Bolton at her side.

ROME -- The Italian journalist wounded by American troops in Iraq after her release by insurgents rejected the U.S. military's account of the shooting and declined Sunday to rule out the possibility she was deliberately targeted. The White House said it was a "horrific accident" and promised a full investigation.

Greenspan proposes consumption tax to boost economy

WASHINGTON -- Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan said Thursday that a new consumption tax -- such as a national sales tax -- could spark the economy as a partial replacement for income taxes. Greenspan cautioned that there would be both political and administrative difficulties in moving toward a new national tax system. Simplification is needed, perhaps a hybrid between consumption taxes and income taxes, he told the President's Advisory Panel on Federal Tax Reform.
