Symbolic stoning of Satan marks end of Muslims' hajj pilgrimage

MINA, Saudi Arabia -- Shuffling slowly but smoothly, huge crowds of people hurled pebbles Thursday at pillars representing Satan, symbolically stoning the devil in a final ritual of their pilgrimage, while Muslims at the hajj and around the world slaughtered sheep, cows and camels to mark the Feast of the Sacrifice holiday.

Washington prepares for inauguration

WASHINGTON -- President Bush will spend 17 minutes sketching overarching goals for his second term Thursday even as debate still swirls over how he fulfilled promises made in his first inaugural address. Former President George H.W. Bush gave his son an "A" for the Inauguration Day speech he delivered in a bone-chilling drizzle four years ago. The president's critics, however, still are challenging the first-term actions that grew out of that address.

Rice begins confirmation for secretary of state

WASHINGTON -- Secretary of State nominee Condoleezza Rice told senators Tuesday that a U.S. exit strategy from Iraq depends on that country's ability to defend itself against terrorists after this month's elections. She vowed to work to ease ties with allies frayed by U.S. policy there.

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Gunmen killed a representative of Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, Iraq's most senior Shiite Muslim cleric, along with the aide's son and four bodyguards in a town south of Baghdad, an official in the cleric's office said Thursday.
