Chopper crash kills 9

FALLUJAH, Iraq -- A U.S. Black Hawk medivac helicopter crashed Thursday near the stronghold of the anti-American insurgency, killing all nine soldiers aboard, the U.S. military said. A witness said the helicopter, which bore red crosses, was hit in the tail by a rocket.

Police apprehend suspected killer

RANGER, Ga. - A manhunt across the Southeast ended late Thursday when a tip led authorities to a jealous ex-husband who allegedly killed three former in-laws and his infant daughter, then fled with three girls. The girls were found safe, and the suspect shot himself in the face after a police chase on Interstate 75 near the Tennessee line. Authorities said he was hospitalized in critical condition. Jerry William Jones, 31, is accused of shooting the former in-laws to death and strangling his infant daughter Wednesday before fleeing with the girls in a stolen sport utility vehicle. Two of the girls are his daughters, and the other is a former stepdaughter.

Professors discuss historical significance, Bush's 2004 election hopes

As the national news media has rushed to make predictions about the effects of Saturday's arrest of Saddam Hussein, IU professors are making speculations of their own concerning the future of America's involvement in Iraq and its effects on the upcoming election in 2004. Stephen Katz, director of undergraduate studies in the Near Eastern Languages and Cultures department, said he thinks the capture will yield mixed results for the United States in Iraq.

WASHINGTON -- U.S. raiders were not certain at first they had their man when they pulled a bearded man from a hole in a Iraq cellar, but soon were able to determine it was Saddam Hussein. The Associated Press was shown documentary evidence that the person captured is Saddam Hussein. The evidence depicted Saddam as disheveled and wearing a long beard. Further evidence depicted Saddam with his trademark mustache but otherwise clean shaven.

President got first heads-up of capture Saturday afternoon

WASHINGTON -- President Bush first learned that Saddam Hussein may have been captured on Saturday afternoon, and was given confirmation of the most sought-after prize in the Iraq war early Sunday, a senior administration official said. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld called the president, who was spending part of the weekend at his Camp David retreat in Maryland, around midday Saturday to deliver the news of the raid's possible success.

Suicide bombers attack U.S. troops

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Three suicide bombers in a furniture truck blew themselves up at the gates of a U.S. Army base Thursday, killing one soldier and wounding 14. It was the third suicide attack on American troops in Iraq this week.

Dow's rise might forecast future economic growth

IU Business professor Robert Klemkosky offered insight into the Dow Jones industrial average's brief foray above the 10,000 mark Tuesday for the first time in 18 months. Although reaching the 10,000 mark is promising for stock owners, the number itself doesn't hold a lot of significance, said Klemkosky, the Fred T. Greene professor of finance at the Kelley School of Business. "Ten thousand really doesn't mean much," he said. "It has been there before, but it gets a lot of attention because people get excited about that number."

War crimes court established for Iraq

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Iraq's U.S.-appointed interim government established a war crimes tribunal Wednesday to try former members of Saddam Hussein's regime, and two U.S. soldiers were killed and four wounded in a northern city. Guerrillas also struck at an Air Force C-17 transport plane with a ground-fired missile, forcing it to return to Baghdad early Tuesday, a senior Pentagon official said. In Baghdad, the U.S. military said the plane reported an engine explosion on takeoff and one of the 16 people on board was slightly injured.

Debate focuses on Dean

DURHAM, N.H. -- Eight Democratic presidential contenders on Tuesday strongly disputed that Howard Dean was the party's best chance for beating President Bush, or that former Vice President Al Gore's endorsement of the front-runner would seal the nomination. Bush in opposition to Taiwan independence

WASHINGTON -- President Bush said Tuesday after meeting with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao that he opposes the apparent interest of Taiwan's leaders in taking steps toward independence. Meeting with reporters in the Oval Office after a 40-minute meeting with Wen, Bush said he had told the premier, "The United States policy is one China." "We oppose any unilateral decision by either China or Taiwan to change the status quo," Bush said, "and the comments and actions made by the leader of Taiwan indicate that he may be willing to make decisions unilaterally, to change the status quo, which we oppose."

Former Sen. Paul Simon dies after undergoing single bypass heart surgery

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Paul Simon, the bow-tie-wearing missionary's son who rose from crusading newspaper owner to U.S. senator and presidential aspirant, died Tuesday, a day after undergoing heart surgery. He was 75. Simon was surrounded by family members at St. John's Hospital in Springfield when he died, according to a statement from Southern Illinois University, where Simon started a public policy institute after his retirement.
