Red Square bomber kills 5

MOSCOW -- A suicide bomber who may have intended to attack Russia's parliament blew herself up outside a nearby upscale hotel across from Red Square on Tuesday, killing five people and sparking fears of a new wave of terror attacks in the Russian capital. The bombing, which also wounded at least 12 people, came on the heels of Sunday's nationwide elections for parliament's lower house and only days after a woman blew herself up on a train in southern Russia, killing 44 people.

Gore endorses Dean for Democratic nomination

NEW YORK -- Former Vice President Al Gore endorsed Howard Dean for the Democratic presidential nomination Tuesday, adding momentum and political prestige to Dean's front-running campaign. Gore said Dean "really is the only candidate who has been able to inspire at the grass-roots level all over the country." He said the former Vermont governor also was the only Democratic candidate who made the correct judgment about the Iraq war.

Palestinians fail to reach cease fire agreement with Israel

CAIRO, Egypt -- Palestinians on Sunday failed to reach agreement on any truce offer to Israel, even a conditional one, after three days of talks mired in arguments, delegates said. Negotiators from Palestinian factions -- including Hamas and Islamic Jihad -- were split over whether to offer a full cease-fire or a limited truce that would only stop attacks inside Israel.

Northeast digs out of snowstorm

Residents of the Northeast climbed through snowdrifts and navigated icy streets and sidewalks Sunday as they dug out from a weekend Nor'easter that dumped more than two feet of snow in places and slammed waves over coastal seawalls. The powerful storm that started plowing up the coast on Friday began losing strength Sunday. At least 10 deaths were linked to the storm around the Northeast.

The House of Bishops elected Rev. Gene Robinson, an active homosexual, as bishop of New Hampshire in August, making him the first openly homosexual bishop in the history of the Episcopal Church. The election of Bishop Robinson has created heated controversy and division within the church, even in the Bloomington community.

Missionary to Palestine brings message home

Reverend Sandra Olewine stands in the pulpit of the First United Methodist Church. As a guest preacher, this is Olewine's first time in Bloomington, but her bond with the church is relatively old. First United is one of about 40 churches across the nation that supports her when she lives under occupation in Bethlehem, Israel. Olewine, 45, has served as the United Methodist liaison to Jerusalem for the past seven years.The Church established the position in 1987 in response to a plea for missionaries by the heads of the Palestinian churches. "Lots of your people come here for tourism," Olewine said, summarizing the Palestinian concern. "And they run where Jesus walked and they never get off the tour bus ... They don't even know people are living here today."

Suspect held for $5 million

The man charged in the kidnapping of a North Dakota college student was ordered held on $5 million bail Thursday after his lawyer said he wanted to stay behind bars for his own safety. As Alfonso Rodriguez Jr., 50, appeared in court, law officers in two states continued the search for 22-year-old Dru Sjodin, missing since she left work at a Victoria's Secret at a Grand Forks mall Nov. 22.

Briton charged with helping 'shoe bomber'

LONDON -- A British man arrested last week in southwestern England was charged Wednesday with conspiring with convicted "shoe-bomber" Richard Reid in an explosives plot, police said. Sajid Badat was charged with three offenses, including that between Sept. 1, 2001, and Nov. 28, 2003, he "unlawfully and maliciously conspired with Richard Reid and others unknown" to cause an explosion "likely to endanger life or cause serious injury" in the United Kingdom or elsewhere, London's Metropolitan Police said.
