Sniper suspect represents himself

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Sniper suspect John Allen Muhammad won a surprise request Monday to represent himself at trial and delivered a rambling opening statement in which he quoted Jesus and spoke about the meaning of truth. "One of the things we're here for today is to find out what everyone wants to know. What happened?" Muhammad told the jury in his capital murder trial.

Manned Chinese spacecraft lands in Northern China

JIUQUAN, China -- The craft that carried China's first astronaut into space touched down on northern grasslands at dawn today, government television said. The man inside, Lt. Col. Yang Liwei, was reported safe and in good condition. China's mission control declared the mission "a success," and Premier Wen Jiabao spoke with Yang and congratulated him, state television said. State television said Shenzhou 5 landed at 6:28 a.m. (6:28 p.m. Wednesday EDT) and that rescue helicopters had found the capsule. The station released an image of the capsule.

Three Americans killed in explosion targeting U.S. diplomatic convoy

BEIT LAHIYA, Gaza Strip -- A remote-controlled bomb exploded under a U.S. diplomatic convoy Wednesday, ripping apart an armored van and killing three Americans in an unprecedented deadly attack on an official U.S. target. In a strongly worded statement, President Bush blamed Palestinian officials for the attack, which wounded another American. "Palestinian authorities should have acted long ago to fight terror in all its forms," Bush said.

Suicide bomber targets Turkish Embassy in Iraq

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Suicide car bombers struck in Baghdad for the third time in a week Tuesday, this time outside the Turkish Embassy in yet another blow against those who would help the U.S. occupation. Witnesses said the driver and a bystander were killed, and hospitals said at least 13 were wounded.

TALLULAH, La. -- A church bus from Texas slammed into a into a tractor-trailer Monday on Interstate 20, killing six people and injuring at least nine. State police spokesman Lt. William Davis said it appeared that the tractor-trailer had stalled and was pulled over on the shoulder of the road when it was struck.

Officials believe Saddam alive in Tikrit

Resistance forces killed one American soldier and wounded two others Monday in a grenade attack in Tikrit, where the U.S. military said it believes Saddam Hussein has been hiding out and influencing the anti-U.S. insurgency. Another soldier was killed by a land mine blast north of here.
