Weapons inspector says no WMD found WASHINGTON -- Chief weapons searcher David Kay said Thursday he has found no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq so far, but he cautioned his team was still in the middle of an intensive hunt. On the issue of whether Saddam Hussein had been in the process of reviving efforts to develop a nuclear weapons program, Kay said investigators had found no evidence beyond a possible tentative restart "at the very most rudimentary level."

Schwarzenegger apologizes for behavior

SAN DIEGO -- Gubernatorial front-runner Arnold Schwarzenegger, acknowledging he has "behaved badly" to women, apologized Thursday and promised he has changed. Schwarzenegger's remarks, as he kicked off a statewide bus tour in the final days of the recall campaign, came after the Los Angeles Times published a story Thursday in which six women accused him of sexually harassing and groping them.

12 al Qaeda killed in army raid

ANGORE ADDA, Pakistan -- Pakistan's army launched its largest offensive against al Qaeda and other militants in a rugged tribal region bordering Afghanistan Thursday, killing at least 12 suspects and arresting 18, military officials said. An Associated Press reporter at the scene saw four bodies. Maj. Gen. Ameer Faisal, the commander of the operation, said eight other bodies were lying in an area about 100 yards away that was too dangerous to enter.

Iraqi police, protesters clash

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Iraqi police opened fire in downtown Baghdad Wednesday after demonstrators demanding jobs stormed a police station, set fire to two cars and threw stones at officers, police said. An American soldier was also killed in a roadside bombing in Tikrit.

IU community confers about presidential race

There may be more than a year before the 2004 presidential election, but the race is already heating up. Newly announced Democratic candidate Gen. Wesley Clark and President George W. Bush are leading recent polls. IU College Republicans President Angel Rivera said he thinks the race will be determined by the two issues that have been at the top of the nation's list in recent years -- the economy and national defense. In the months directly following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and the subsequent military action in Afghanistan, Bush enjoyed high approval ratings.

Last marines leave Liberia

MONROVIA, Liberia -- U.S. military planes and helicopters carried the last few U.S. ground forces out of war-ruined Liberia on Tuesday -- leaving Liberians thankful for their help, but dismayed at their silent withdrawal. About 30 members of a U.S. military liaison team flew out of Liberia's main airport, ending their work with a West African-led peace mission.

FBI probes Bush staff on leak

WASHINGTON -- The FBI began a full-scale criminal investigation Tuesday into whether White House officials illegally leaked the identity of an undercover CIA officer, and President Bush ordered his staff to cooperate with the first major probe of his administration.

Noted professor, Palestinian activist, Edward Said dies at 67

IU professors are mourning the loss of a colleague this week. Edward Said, a Columbia University professor and Palestinian activist, died Wednesday in Manhattan at the age of 67 from leukemia. His life touched many IU professors both personally and professionally.
