Lawyer: Saudi could behead man for witchcraft

The lawyer of a Lebanese TV psychic who was convicted in Saudi Arabia for witchcraft said Thursday her client could be beheaded this week and urged Lebanese and Saudi leaders to help spare his life. Attorney May al-Khansa said she learned from a judicial source that Ali Sibat is to be beheaded Friday, but she does not have any official confirmation of this. Saudi judicial officials could not be reached for comment.

U.S. Navy frigate captures 5 pirates

Suspected Somali pirates fired on a U.S. Navy warship off East Africa early Thursday in what appeared to be a ransom-seeking attack on an American guided missile frigate, officials said. The USS Nicholas returned fire on the pirate skiff, sinking it and confiscating a nearby mothership. The Navy took five pirates into custody, said Navy spokesman Lt. Patrick Foughty.

Militia suspects heard in court

Several members of a Christian militia that prosecutors claim plotted to kill police officers were scheduled to be in court Wednesday to determine if they will be allowed to go free on bond. Bond hearings are scheduled for the alleged ringleader, David Brian Stone, and other members of the Hutaree militia, a small group that was preparing to fight the Antichrist.

Gunman sprays DC crowd, killing 4 and wounding 5

A gunman sprayed bullets from a moving vehicle into a crowd, killing four and wounding at least five others, before leading police on a chase into a neighboring county. Three people were arrested in the drive-by shooting Tuesday, but investigators said the motive wasn’t clear.

VA doctors prohibited from prescribing medical pot

When Paul Culkin came home to New Mexico after serving with an Army bomb squad in Iraq, he tried counseling and medications offered by the Department of Veterans Affairs to cope with his post-traumatic stress disorder. Nothing worked very well. Then he found a new alternative: marijuana. New Mexico is the only state that explicitly allows people with PTSD to smoke pot under its medical marijuana law — an issue that is getting attention around the country at a time when traumatized vets are coming home from wars in Iraq and Afghanistan in large numbers.
