Classes at Va. Tech resume amid tributes

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech students somberly returned to campus Monday, pausing for a moment of silence to remember the classmates murdered a week ago in a gunman’s rampage. Students and faculty gathered about 7:10 a.m. near the dormitory where the first victims, Ryan Clark and Emily Hilscher, were killed. They also gathered on the main campus lawn and held several impromptu memorials as the smell of scented candles filled the morning air.

The trust funds for Social Security and Medicare will last a year longer than previously estimated, trustees said Monday. That means 2041 for the Social Security trust fund to be exhausted and 2019 for Medicare. In their annual report on the financial health of the government’s two biggest benefit programs, the trustees said that slight reductions in projected benefits and slightly higher tax collections had extended the dates that the trust funds are projected to be depleted.

Kurd gunmen kill 23 in Iraq

BAGHDAD – Gunmen in northern Iraq stopped a bus filled with Christians and members of a tiny Kurdish religious sect, police said, separating out the groups and taking 23 of the passengers away to be shot.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Wednesday that diplomatic efforts to resolve the standoff with Iran over its nuclear program are working. And they should get a chance to succeed, he added. Gates said many nations are “united in telling Iran what it needs to do with respect to its nuclear program.” The United States and its allies have led efforts to pass two U.N. Security Council resolutions punishing Iran for refusing to suspend uranium enrichment, which can develop nuclear weapons.

Virginia Tech gunman sent material to NBC

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Between his first and second bursts of gunfire, the Virginia Tech gunman mailed a package to NBC News containing what authorities said were images of him brandishing weapons and a video of him delivering a diatribe about getting even with rich people.
