Iran, Syria invited to meeting about Iraq

WASHINGTON – The United States and the Iraqi government are launching a new diplomatic initiative to invite Iran and Syria to a “neighbors meeting” on stabilizing Iraq, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Tuesday.

Britain’s defense secretary on Monday announced the deployment of 1,400 extra troops to Afghanistan. It bolsters NATO’s mission to oust the resurgent Taliban only days after Prime Minister Tony Blair disclosed plans to trim British forces in Iraq. The deployment will bring British troop levels in Afghanistan to around 7,700 until 2009, meaning Britain will have more forces based there than in Iraq for the first time since the 2003 Iraq invasion.

VIENNA, Austria – Iran has expanded its uranium enrichment program instead of complying with a U.N. Security Council ultimatum to freeze it, the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency said Thursday in a finding that clears the way for harsher sanctions against Tehran.

JetBlue terminal at JFK airport begins to return to normal 6 days after storm

NEW YORK – The six-day siege of angry and disgruntled travelers at JetBlue’s Kennedy airport terminal appeared to ease on Monday as service desks functioned more smoothly and customer calm prevailed despite flight cancellations. The beleaguered company said it was canceling almost a quarter of its flights on Monday but planned to restore full operations on Tuesday, a week after a Valentine’s Day snowstorm created a travel meltdown that virtually paralyzed JetBlue.

XM Satellite Radio and Sirius Satellite Radio have agreed to merge. The deal, announced Monday, would consolidate the only two companies in the emerging business of subscription-only satellite radio, but it is sure to face tough scrutiny from federal regulators. The two companies said in a statement that Mel Karmazin, the CEO of Sirius, would become chief executive of the new company. Gary Parsons, the chairman of XM, would remain in that role.
